Phillips vs Morsy 20:13 - Jan 17 with 3802 viewsBellevue_Blue

I think Kalvin Phillips is a perfectly fine Premier League squad player but I think last night showed again that we miss Morsy when he doesn't play.

Every time Morsy receives the ball off the back 4, he's looking to get on the half turn and play forward into the two 10's. The opposite is true of Kalvin, he's consistently happy just to pop the ball sideways or backwards and that is entirely ineffective when playing against a high press. I think it was a big reason why or attacking return was so poor last night.

We need CM's who can drive us forward and both Morsy & Cajuste do that.

Whether it's a case of confidence in ability or strength (definitely the latter, probably both), Morsy just has more about him than Phillips.

I made the same observation during the game that Phillips was so quick to simply make the pass back to Walton/Woolfenden when he received it off Davis/Greaves. Morsy is much more likely to take a touch and assess what options he might have and potentially try and turn and drive - not every time of course.

Unfortunately, Phillips doesn't have much confidence atm it seems, hence why he always opts for the safe option.

Cheers Pep

I do agree with that. We are seeing glimpses of the Kalvin we took on loan, such as his lovely strike against Bristol Rovers, plus some other lovely passes and touches, but we did take a risk when we signed him. His confidence is the biggest issue, and I'm really hoping he gets a breakthrough here.

He has so many wonderful attributes, I just think he lacks a bit of self-belief. He shouldn't. He is a wonderful midfielder. He just needs to believe that himself.

I do think the only way for him to gain a bit more confidence is being in a midfield 3 and giving him license to go forward. Unfortunately, we're coming up against world class midfielders with a lot of confidence every week.

It's certainly not going to get any easier for him in the coming weeks if he was to play.

Phillips dd the screening role in front of the back 4/5. Cajuste ended up doing the same role as Phillips as the Brighton midfielders 20 and 30 pressed them back. Our guys were done buy better athletic/physical players and a strategy that left us unable to break out or even gain possession very often at times. The gap between our deep midfield and Delap and the 10s was to much to bridge, which forced the 10s deeper and they eneded up competing with Brighton's 20 and 30 who physically they were no match for. This of course left Delap completely isolated. The only time we found relief for parts of the game was when Burns was able to resume his right wing duties. I give the credit to Brighton and accept our next midfield purchases have to be more physically able to challenge in strength and speed terms. The Premier has changed in a short time. A player like Phillips was perfectly adequate for the role 5 years ago, but the physical capabilities of midfielders have gone up a notch.

that was our biggest weakness in the Brighton game, the take a moment and assess the options first, because Brightons push was instantly on us and cut out all the options. We needed Phillips quicker choices, move the ball quicker, the few times in the 2nd half when we actually unlocked Brighton was when the players didnt wait to choose what to do, they just did it.

Phillips is not Morsy and Morsy is not Phillips, they both have roles in our team, but its people with their favourites theyll defend till theyre blue in the face

That's a piss poor choice of avatar!
Remember 50,000 dead.

Edit...PS, how many more hostages would still be alive if Nethanyahoo had admitted he turned his back on his country's security, got complacent about mass detention in Gaza and negotiated their release ?
