Passport Renewal 10:40 - Feb 9 with 1521 views | Churchman | A good news story really, considering how badly so many services operate these days. I came back from Finland a week ago. Now because my passport was just over six months away from the 10th anniversary of its issue, every time an official looked at it I got warned it’d need replacing in the near future (I knew that anyway). So on Tuesday, I looked up what to do. Two choices. Get the Post Office to do it all or go online and do it yourself after acquiring a digital photo that complies. So I went to the Post Office and it was crammed with the usual fetid rabble so abandoned that. Next to Timpsons. The mush took a picture (so old and ugly it nearly broke the lens!), fired it into his system. It was checked to meet Passport Office standards and a code plus four prints issued. Back home went online bunged in a few details and the code I’d been given and up popped the grisly image. It was all checked and bingo! Please send the old passport. I did that day (signed for delivery) and hey presto, all approved and the new passport arrived yesterday. Very impressive service. Cost: just over £100 all in. Moral of tale is: 1. Check your passport issue date and not the printed expires date. That’s what they go on. 2. Check the requirements of the country you are going to. 3. Get a new passport if in doubt. You may ‘waste’ a few months but that’s better than being given the see ya laters at Customs. 4. Allow a bit of time to get your new passport - mine took no time at all, but I suspect it takes longer in the run up to summer 5. Lastly, the online service works well. My mate took his own digital pic to save £12 and got into problems. Getting someone to do it and who can get it checked up front was worth it to me.
Passport Renewal on 11:07 - Feb 9 with 1444 views | Bent_double | I did mine last October, and being the tight g1t that I am, I was determined to take my own photo rather than pay another £10+ at one of the photo booths. It took a while, especially as I couldn't find a suitably well-lit place with a neutral background wall, but got there in the end, did the application on-line, posted off the old passport, and the new one arrived about 4-5 days later. Pretty good service.

Passport Renewal on 11:21 - Feb 9 with 1377 views | blueasfook | Last time I renewed my passport a couple of years ago, I did it the cheapskate way and did my own photo. The photo analyser on the website is very picky and it kept rejecting it for being too dark, too light, not clear enough blah blah. Eventually after about an hour of taking photos and retrying I finally got one that it accepted. But yeah get one done at a passport photo place.

Passport Renewal on 12:10 - Feb 9 with 1281 views | OldFart71 | I had to renew my wife's passport last year. I did it online. Took a photo and sent it in. When I took the photo it questioned whether I thought it was suitable. I answered yes. Unfortunately the photo was rejected and I received confirmation of this. I took another photo straight away and the passport was with us within a couple of days. Very impressed. One governmental department that actually works. Miracles never cease.

What happens if you need to dash away somewhere the day after you have sent your old passport back? You don’t get to go😂 You can actually get a passport in a couple of days but you will pay £207.50 for your standard one?
Passport Renewal on 13:01 - Feb 9 with 1174 views | Zx1988 | So it's taking about a week at the moment? Sounds good. Going away in April, and then fairly regularly from June onwards, with my passport expiring in November. Probably worth taking the plunge now, rather than risking the late-spring/early-summer rush.

Yet another Brexit benefit I’m afraid. It’s actually how foreign passports have worked for years, but the U.K. way of doing things was accepted while we were in the EU and not a ‘third country’.
Passport Renewal on 12:02 - Feb 20 with 561 views | Zx1988 | Just to add my two-penneth-worth... Renewed my own passport last week. My old one was valid until November but, with a few trips coming up over the summer, and a few other trips in the offing, I didn't want to end up within that tricky six-month window, or find myself renewing during the busy summer period. Filled out the application online on Wednesday, and posted the old passport to them on Thursday by Special Delivery, arriving on Friday and being logged as received on Monday evening. The new one (albeit very much the wrong colour) arrived this morning, so it only took them 48hrs to process things once they'd logged my old passport as having been received. A surprisingly quick and painless experience!
