I've been watch Educating East London, and old channel 4 show about a particular school. I think I could do the job of go-between between kids in trouble and the teachers, but how on earth do you get into that line of work?

Experience of social or youth work might be an advantage.

Look for pastoral jobs - head of year, pastoral support officer and similar such jobs. The job spec will make it clear if it’s a teaching role or not.
It’s not a glamorous or well paid job though. One word of warning though, don’t go into it thinking you’re there to save the kids or protect them from teachers etc. it’s about teamwork with the adults and communicating with parents and other staff too.
The really excellent staff who do this and last a long time understand it’s a difficult balance. |  |

Thanks Mullet. Appreciate the warning too. My eyes are open though - without going into details, I've seen all sorts of behaviours on a footy pitch and that's when they're actively choosing to be there, so realise school must levels up from that. | |

Have a go at Youth Work volunteering first
The Mix in Stowmarket do a few excellent alternative provision projects where they have link workers in schools that then work with the young people outside school hours. Somewhere like that are good to chat to and will often have programs that need volunteers to help out. |  | | |
