The full journey of Ipswich's FA Cup opponents so far 13:27 - Feb 12 with 1003 viewsThatMuhrenCross

I was interested to track our opposition back to the early preliminary rounds of the FA Cup this season, and it made for interesting reading.

Coventry 1-4 Ipswich
Ipswich 3-0 Bristol Rovers
Bristol Rovers 3-1 Weston Super Mare
Lowestoft Town 1-3 Weston Super Mare
Lowestoft Town 3-1 Haringey Borough
Witham Town 1-1 Haringey Borough (Haringey win on penalties)
Witham Town 1-0 Sheringham
Derham Town 1-3 Sheringham
Sheringham 2-1 Woodbridge Town

Really interesting to see the full journey of the tie, and just how local it actually began.

Probably would be quite fun to pick a random non-league team next season and follow the journey all the way to Wembley!

Pretty sure this used to be a regular 'Football focus' feature?

That's a long away trip to Lowestoft for Weston Super Mare fans, at 5 and a half hours each way. At least they got to enjoy the win, and Bristol is close. Although looking at their league, they do have to go as far as Essex anyway.

I was in WSM just this weekend. Coldest walk along a seafront and pier I think I have ever experienced.

No ind team has won more than one game in that sequence. Time it was broken. COYB

Edit. Ignore me that is wrong..

To be fair, each individual team in that sequence will have had their own very different journey - I was just more intrigued by the branch that goes back to the Suffolk teams. I'm sure, for example, Weston Super Mare will have had to win a few more games to get to the point of meeting Lowestoft.

I attempted this in 2011-2012; went from Extra-Preliminary to 5th Round Proper. I picked the lowest ranked local team I could find, and followed the winner each round:

Extra Pre-Lim - Burnham Ramblers 1 -1 Barking
Extra Pre-Lim Replay - Barking 0 - 1 Burnham

I have never cheered a goal so hard as when Burnham scored a last minute screamer to save me from extra time and allow me to exit Barking with myself and my car intact!

Pre-Lim - Burnham 3 - 3 Hertford Town
Pre-Lim Replay - Hertford Town 2-2 Burnham (Hertford win 3-2 on pens)
1st Qual - Hertford Town 0-1 Oxhey Jets

Hertford was probably my favourite ground of the whole thing, really lovely place and super friendly. They even posted me a programme after I forgot to pick one up on the day.

2nd Qual - Oxhey Jets 1-2 Hendon

Nearly missed the start as not easy to find or park

3rd Qual - Maldon & Tiptree 1-3 Hendon

Qualifying is regional so at least wasn't going to have to drag to Darlington or anything, but really funny when Hendon were drawn away to the team down the road!

4th Qual - Luton 5-1 Hendon
1st Rd - Luton 1-0 Northampton
2nd Rd - Luton 2-4 Cheltenham

Luton were of course non-league back then, and I enjoyed my three visits there, and was gutted they couldn't quite make it over the line into the 3rd round.

3rd Rd - Tottenham 3-0 Cheltenham

Only time these two have ever played!

4th Rd - Watford 0-1 Tottenham

Tickets were already getting hard to come by at this stage. Spurs sold out their allocation straight away, but Watford had crowd trouble in the cup the previous year so were being super restrictive on who they would sell to. They were nowhere near sold out but you had to have been to a game that year to be eligible. I even explained my situation at the ticket office but computer said no. So I headed up to Vicarage Road on a Friday night with no ticket, and managed to get one off a scalper just before kick-off.

Tottenham got Stevenage away in Round 5 - capacity 7,000. You had to have been to the last four Stevenage home games to be eligible for a place in a ballot for tickets, so in the days before online resale sites, I decided to call it a day at that point.

Spurs beat Stevenage and played Bolton in the Quarters. That was the Fabrice Muamba game, so in a way I'm glad I was saved from experiencing that live. They eventually went out 5-1 to Chelsea in the semi's, who then beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Final.

It was a lot of fun and I'd highly recommend giving it a go. Once I've done the 92 I may very well give it another try one year.

I am actually selling all my programmes and tickets from this run on Ebay at the moment. Plus the half and half scarf I bought for the Spurs vs Cheltenham game (I feel one of the very few occasions which it would be justified)
