Oooh. I might buy a pair. They should approach Atom Retro if they want to shift some.

I like The Who, I like them a lot, but they were a strange bunch.

They were always connected to The Mod scene but they weren’t really Mods. Well, Keith Moon maybe but not the others. Townsend now claims all the Mod thing but I think he’s a bit of an odd bod.

It’s a bit like The Chords, they were a band liked by Mods but IMHO just hangers on, unlike Purple Hearts.

Edit. I’m 60 this year and I’ve seen more bands than you can shake a stick at - plus all the biggies. Even though they are one of my bands I grew up with and only from Romford, I have never seen The Purple Hearts 😢. I got close once but Bossbeard got all the timings wrong and we watched a pile of sh1te instead.

I'm just going to listen to it but I'll be back.

Is there any one of that lot still alive?

All of the original line up are deceased. Of the line-up at the O.G.W.T only the beautifully named Artimus Pyle (drummer) is still going strong.

Thanks for the info.

I can’t proclaim to be a massive fan but I like what I know of them - which is limited.

What happened to white suit guy?

Was he on the plane?

A friend of mine used to know Siouxsie Sioux really well back in the day as he fronted one of the warm up acts. I asked him what she was like and he reckoned really nice - from what he can remember of those days which isn’t much. Fun but mental times for him. I’m seeing him for a catch up Thursday funnily enough

Mrs FBI was a punk back in '77 onward and crossed paths with Siouxsie a few times. Reckons she was nice to the blokes and an absolute b!tch to the women.

For context, my profile pic shows me in August 1978. When Gill was a 17 year old punk. Funny old world innit?

That will be Allen Collins who did the solo on Free Bird. He had a tragic life really. He survived the plane though injured. Went solo as the LS project was dead due to the fatalities. Lost his wife to cancer. Got a girlfriend pregnant and was settling down, but had a bad car crash that killed the girlfriend and broke his back, confined to a wheel chair for the rest of his short life. Brought to trial and was forced to address audiences at LS (they had reformed) about the dangers of drink driving. So went from guitar hero to zero. Could not re-join the band and died from pneumonia in 1990. That's rock 'n' roll, baby. I've always been a fan of LS, but not the limp reformed vesion.

Think of the furore a song like that would create nowadays, it would get blown up out of all proportion

Annie Nightingale took over OGWT in 1978 and as she explains in the following documentary (shown a few years ago on BBC Four) she decided to shake things up. I am not sure if Bob Harris was given the boot.

I believe Whispering Bob still was involved, but music had moved on from prog rock etc. He despised punk and new wave so was hardly ideal to front a music show, showcasing contemporary music. He is massively into country music now and still has a country music radio show somewhere in the ether.

I once went to a Michael Clark dance performance at Sadlers Wells (maybe Solo).

He was ill on the day and replaced by an understudy.

That was a bit of a blow: a bit like turning up to see a band and finding them replaced by the support act.

ooph, bit like going to see The Fall, only to find out MES couldn’t make it.

I once went to a Mike Clark performance with my mum. One bit consisted of him dancing against a backdrop of a video of him masturbating, which I wasn’t expecting.

His back was to the audience in the video, so I guess that was one thing.

Whilst they fully embraced the mod scene in 64/65, it has been said that The Small Faces were mods that became a band, The Who were a band who became mods. That seems pretty fair. When they switched from The Who to the High Numbers under the stewardship of Pete Meaden there is no arguement they did the hard yards around the mod nightclubs around much of the country. They actually supported The Beatles in Blackpool in October 64. They had their own group of followers known as the 100 faces. This was the time they started their residency at the Marque with The Who monicker restored. Meaden had been bought out by Lambert and Stamp, both of whom were better able to make the most of the band.
They'd moved on from Mod by early 66 and rechristened themselves as part of the pop art scene.
I think Pete did believe in mod once he'd got into it. After all, he revisited the scene with Quadrophenia. Roger was an old rock and roller but really dug the blues and was a James Brown fan. John was never a mod and would've been just as happy playing with Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. Keith only ever wanted to be a Beach Boy and lived his best life during a scandinavian tour in 66 when the band's version of Barbara Ann (sung by Keith) was doing well in the charts over there.
The My Generation LP is a mod record. Their follow up, A Quick One, is not.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.
