Fa Cup European spot 13:27 - Mar 3 with 1121 viewsITFCMonk

Seen some people debating the financial difference between staying in the league or winning the cup. Surely qualifying into Europe would also be worth quite a bit financially?

Nowhere remotely close to the value of staying up.

Didn’t they change the rules a while ago to state that you had to be in the top flight to qualify for Europe via a domestic cup?

Not even that complicated - they simply transferred the European spot away from the FA Cup so it just goes into another league position down the table. Yet another small change to weight the system further for the big boys. As if...

- Maximum Wage abolition
- Moving to 3 pts for a win
- Stopping sharing gate receipts
- Creation of the Premier League and cutting the rest of the league adrift financially
- Being party to the expansion of a "Champions" league that lets in teams that haven't won a championship since before we did (yes - you, Spurs!)
- Invading lower division cups to play young players they have monopolised (EFL Trophy, National League Cup)
- Introducing FFP rules that very deliberately stop another Chelsea or Man City investing to compete to turn over the existing order of the vested interests (e.g. Arsenal, Man Utd - and most of all Liverpool - who have driven this unfairness over 50-60 years).

...weren't already enough to have created the sham of a 'league' we have been playing in this season.

Eh, that's not true. Winner of the FA Cup still gets a Euro spot, unless the winner has already qualified for the Champions league, in which case the FC Cup "spot" goes to the next highest PL team not qualified for Europe.

In the unlikely event we win the cup (we probably would have to beat Man City in either the semi or the final, which they will take seriously)...

But one benefit I see with qualifying for Europe beyond the financial - it might make it easier to hold onto certain players who otherwise might be tempted away to lower PL teams, even if we happen to be in the Championship.

You can't be suggesting that removing the maximum wage was a bad idea, although it massively weakened the poorer Lancashire clubs like Blackpool, Preston, Bolton, Burnley, Blackpool etc. Removing the "retain & transfer" clause after a court case involving George Eastham & Newcastle also allowed players to force a move to a bigger club (plus the Bosman ruling years later).
how did 3pts for a win benefit the big boys? This was an idea of Jimmy Hill's which certainly promoted attacking football.
You could add the huge expansion of substitutes, which massively helps the bigger clubs, with their stronger benches. I would go to 3 outfield subs only.

The last season we played in Europe we went into administration, which should be an indication of the gulf in money between Europa League football, and the Premier League payday.

Apologies - I meant the runner-up spot if the winner was already in a better competition (that has previously allowed Hull etc. to get in there).

I guess that shows that I am already resigned to a Europe-less Man City having won it even now. And they will.

Lets not kid ourselves, qualifying for europe and being relegated would be an absolute disaster. Chuck the europa league games into an already congested championship season and we would struggle. Next year the focus needs to be on coming up and only that.

We need some sort of maximum wage regulation now given the pandora's box that opened in the 1990s - and not at the ridiculous proportion of turnover which still embeds it. Maximum wage spending on your squad set at £x million - across the board set at 75% of the median wage bill in the Premier League at the time it's introduced and then determined by inflation from then on? Of course they'll all then plead that this will disadvantage us in Europe - but maybe UEFA could look at a more Europe wide scheme.

3 points for a win definitely means that holding on for a point was worth more in the past - and let's face it a huge amount of these games we've had this season we have been looking for a point at best. Mind you - I do accept we'd have won the league in 1975 over Derby if there'd been three points for a win then... ;o)

Totally agree with the subs thing which has now grown out of control (was probably about right at three subs with a mandated goalkeeper sub as it was in 92/92. Add it to the list!

Yeah - we did that in 2002. Although fantastic memories of Luxembourg and that band in the square.
