Might be worth anyone wanting to lay any blame at his door remembering if it wasn’t for his last minute winner vs Wolves we wouldn’t still be in with a realistic chance of staying up.

I’d rather not blame anyone but would question why someone like Clarke with a good pen record and fresh on as a sub is not a better option than Taylor.

Who knows, if we make the great escape it could be that going out here is what helps us achieve that.

I don't lay the blame on him at all. I posted that his body language suggested he was not mentally up for the 5th pen, but I lay no blame at his door. If we'd wanted to get through to the next round, then 120 minutes of open play should have settled that. Penalties is a lottery.

Not really the same situation though is it. Scoring an injury tie winner and being able to handle a penalty in a shootout after you have previously taken an extremely poor penalty in a shootout already this season.

Credit to him for stepping forward, but the manager and coaches should know a player well enough to see if they are handling the pressure. And if you are giving him one do it early when there might be the chance you get it back not that penalty when the previous 9 had been brilliant.

Should have been managed differently IMO.

no I see time and time again managers keep their "best" penalty takers for the last penalties, Ronaldo for one was picked as the last once cant remember if it was Portugal or for a clubside and it got decided before he could even get a kick of the ball, and everyone then goes literally why didnt such and such take the first one etc etc etc etc this is rubbish play your best takers first.

Morsy takes the first, he's captain, sets the tone, thats fine , the rest of the order then doesnt matter at all its whoever sticks their hand up and says theyre willing to take one, and if they miss, so be it, thats a penalty shoot out, no blame

and hey if everyone is so smart at picking penalty takers, who was going to be our 6th ?

You're right about Ronaldo. What that shows is that it is madness leaving your best penalty takers till last. They might not get to take one.

I don't blame him but having seen him on the floor with cramp only moments earlier, he would not have been my choice for the 5th penalty

There's only 1 real reason Ronaldo was down as taking the last penalty and that was purely about his ego... he wanted the glory and to be the one to take the decisive spot kick.. fact it didn't get that far and watching him go into meltdown was hilarious

Penalties aren’t a lottery- that would suggest that the winner is down to pure luck and chance.

Agreed. They are a leveller, but it's still a test of skill and nerve.
