Big decisions needed by KM 10:43 - Mar 9 with 1913 viewsChocorange

Time for KM to earn the big bucks and make tough decisions.

What we saw yesterday was the same as we have seen several times this season.
Not taking our chances and a failure to keep a clean sheet.

But is KM feeling the pressure to pick players with big price tags and big reputations instead of doing what is best for the team?

At the back we can’t keep a clean sheet for love or money, Wolfy is only just back in the team due to injuries and crap performances by new signings, Burgess played well when he was in the team and again at Forest , is our best player in the air ( where was he at Man U when we conceded three set pieces?) and he also has a great understanding of when to set Leif free down the left to attack.

Greaves goes sideways and safe with his passing often ignoring runs and calls for the ball to be played wide and the one time he did yesterday it ended up near the corner flag miles ahead of our player. I have yet to see …. and the goals against every game does not say he is any better.. price tag pick?
Burgess out of contract in the summer , we could easily lose him too without even a fee. Is Greaves really the player for next season?

At the other end , Delap is a victim of his own success , the other team just mark him out of the game and he is still a young striker learning his trade. Why are we putting all our eggs into the Delap basket to survive in the Prem , when he won’t even be here next season.

In contrast Hirst started against Brentford and linked up play well, we scored 3 and wouldn’t have lost without the sending off. He started against Coventry and we scored 4. In both those games we played the KM way and looked like the attacking team we were in our two promotion seasons.
Hirst Started against Forest , we take the lead through him., links up play and pressures their attackers without fouling them. That was lost when he went off.

Delap came on in the Brentford game and looked hungry was flying through tiring defenders scored his goal and was a handful.

Definition of madness is to keep doing the same thing over and over , but it’s what we are doing.

He won’t change tactics, however naive they have been this season. We don’t have players capable of playing the way we’ve tried to do, but we haven’t performed atrociously despite this. We should have learnt from seeing how badly it went for Burnley, and the style earns a lot of praise but not a lot of points. We at least should know that if we ever get promoted again we can’t attempt this again, not without recruiting much better and expensive players. If we do we’ll end up being yo-yo boys at best.

He’s been making tough decisions all season. Some good some not so good, it’s easy as fans to “see” what needs doing based on the 90+ mins we see but it’s far more complex than that.

Players not playing are always better when they are the alternative to those playing in a losing side. We have struggled to keep clean sheets for the last 2 seasons, it’s not a new thing this year, we conceded 57 goals in the league last season, more than average sides like Bristol City and Millwall, but we scored our way out of it. That was with defenders like Burgess and Woolfenden in the side, so expecting them to do better in the PL is unlikely. Remember the capitulation against Cardiff last season, we’ve done the same in 2-3 games this season.

Our issue is not as simple as conceding too many, it’s about not scoring enough, being physically and mentally strong enough to compete at the highest level for often 100+ minutes, it’s about sometimes just having a bit of luck go our way and not picking up injuries to key players.

We are where we are because over the season we have not quite been strong enough in matches to hang in, or not quite good enough to nick that goal and have been punished a lot more due to the standard we play at.

We are not a bad side but young and naive with a lot of potential, and that includes the manager. As I said on an earlier thread judge how good we are in Oct/Nov as that will be the real test of the squads mettle.

I trust KM to make the right decisions more often than not.

I think you raise some very good points, you just missed out that Leif should be dropped in favour of the other fella.

Poll: If we sing for 90 mins for all remaining games, how many points is it worth?

We still conceded lots of goals and bad goals with Burgess at the back.

Yes Greaves is the guy for next season.

Putting all our eggs in the Delap basket sort of makes sense when he our best player by an absolute mile and will likely be playing for a top 6 team next year.

He has made plenty of big decisions this season. We are just playing teams who have much better individuals than we do.

Posted this last week, it still rings true this week.

This week exactly the same mistakes from price tag footballers … so so frustrating , we have a bunch of individuals starting games , with no teamwork cohesion especially when the front 4 are the 4 that started today , gettin in each other’s way, passes too short, or too late.

What does Hirst have to do to start a game?
Two goals for him from open play ( not penalties) in around 90 minutes of football recently.
As I said last week , he joined the play up at Brentford and at Coventry …he’s the one in form , simple as that.

Compare to Delap 2 goals from open play since Tottenham away on 10th November. 4 months ago.
That’s just a big part of why we are where we are…. Along with the defence and of course the keeper issues earlier this season.

Big decisions dodged today, will they be taken next match?

Delap has been poor since Tottenham, reminds me of Macauley Bonne. Score and score than goes MIA for the rest of the season. Time to start Hirst.

Unless McK and MA wants to put him in the ITFC shop window for summer. Even so he isn't looking that good to prospective buyers atm.

Hirst should be starting every game. He's a very good leader of the line, but mcjenna only has eyes for Delap, who is very raw and inexperienced as a number 9. But McKenna will not change his approach and THAT is why we are being relegated. He players players out of position, wrong combinations, sticks with the same inexperienced front liberty when it's clear they can't score, or link up well. Continued to play the car crash that is Muric despite it being Crystal clear he is a liability. Doesn't play the best players we have in their most effective positions, never one has tried Hirst, and Delap in the same team at any point in a game, and consistently makes substitutions at ridiculous points in a game when there's little or no time gir those subs to be effective. Will he ever learn? 29 games says not a chance in he'll.
