Points tallies - Champ vs Prem 10:42 - Mar 18 with 1209 viewsFunge

I am quite a dull man, and, looking at the cumulative points tallies for the 3 promoted teams last year, note the following:-

Leicester - 97
Us - 96
Saints - 87

That's 280 points (notwithstanding Leeds too, who ended up on 90)

With 9 games to go, these same three teams currently have 43...

Us - 17
Leicester - 17
Saints - 9

That's an absolutely berserk difference, even allowing for a quarter of the season to go, and noting that we're going to play 8 fewer games this season.

In summary - the Prem is very, very difficult.

It's worse for Leicester and Southampton who were frankly established Premier League clubs bar last season, but expected for Ipswich. I think the saddest part for most of us is earlier in the season we looked a lot better and had more bite, as newer players have been bedded in and become regulars we've looked like relegation fodder in almost all games post-Fulham.

No promoted side will scrape 30 points and will go down as the worst bottom three in Premier League history.

Until next season.

It’s easy to say ‘worst bottom three’ but that’s removing a lot of context. The PL is much harder now than when we were last in the top flight.

The bottom three, with exactly the same squads, would probably survive in the Premier League of ten years ago.

But yes, going by such statistics the bottom three are miles behind the pace.

By lunatic idea would be to increase relegation to the bottom 6 with the top 6 going up on the championship. That would increase the excitement of the top division and make it less stale. Obviously this will never ever happen.

It's the post-Christmas (ish) home form of all three that gets me. It's astonishingly bad.

Leicester's last 7
Leicester 0-3 Wolverhampton W
Leicester 0-2 Manchester C
Leicester 0-2 Crystal Palace
Leicester 0-2 Fulham
Leicester 0-2 Arsenal
Leicester 0-4 Brentford
Leicester 0-3 Manchester U

Southampton's last 8
Southampton 1-5 Chelsea
Southampton 0-5 Tottenham H
Southampton 0-1 West Ham U
Southampton 0-5 Brentford
Southampton 1-3 Newcastle U
Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth
Southampton 0-4 Brighton & H A
Southampton 1-2 Wolverhampton W

Our last 9
Ipswich 0-1 Crystal Palace
Ipswich 1-2 Bournemouth
Ipswich 0-4 Newcastle U
Ipswich 2-0 Chelsea (yay!)
Ipswich 0-2 Brighton & H A
Ipswich 0-6 Manchester C
Ipswich 1-2 Southampton
Ipswich 1-4 Tottenham H
Ipswich 2-4 Nottingham F

So, all defeats across the board, apart from our Chelsea win.

Christ alive it’s bad. And things felt so good after that Chelsea game. How quickly hope was extinguished.

I'm not really sure what you've done here as you miss out all the matches we got points and have done the same for the other two.

I mean your general theme is undoubtedly correct but the data is dubious.

Eh? Could have sworn I watched Southampton beat us a few weeks ago - maybe it was just a bad dream.

EDIT: Home form - note to self, read more carefully.

It's just all our home form, so it's correct isn't it?

MOTD2 mentioned Leicester's 7 home losing streak, without scoring, a couple of nights ago

I haven't really missed any out. It's the last [x] number of home games for each. The [x] is different for each team, granted, but that's just because these current bad runs started at different times.

That's why I said it will be the lowest points until next season, as three more lambs will be led to the Premier League slaughter after us.

I think a better idea would have been to be more heavy-handed with points deductions for clubs who have cheated the system, Forest, Everton, and Manchester City have all cheated and will be Premier League clubs next season, as have Leicester, yet Ipswich and Southampton who have played by the rules won't be.

I would also like to see the league increased to 24 teams, the Super Clubs have more than enough quality players now, and broad enough squads, to manage a few extra games a season. They are insistent on playing their U23s in the EFL Trophy but won't use them in league fixtures, well, here's an opportunity to bed them in if the extra games are so hard to manage!

As for the financial cheating, and slap-on-the-wrist style deductions, it hardly incentivizes fair play, does it? For all their piss-taking of "tinpot Ipswich" on Saturday, Forest fans seem to have short memories, they cheated and stayed up and reaped the benefits of that cheating. Everton will stay up and get a massive stadium to further cement their place dispute cheating.

It is not really sporting is it?

Yes, sorry missed the word 'home'. I was expecting to see the runs of overall form, which look pretty awful all round too.

Another potential upside of a 24-team Premier League is that you could finally change the Championship promotion system so the top 3 go up automatically, which on average is a fairer reflection of how teams have performed, and then 4-7 playoff as usual. So 4 up, 4 down. It would allow more clubs, and a better turnover of clubs, to get a fairer crack at the top flight in my view.
