Alan Hansen - MBE on 22:56 - Mar 18 with 1290 views | MattinLondon | This is taken from his wiki page - could well explain it. However, both Ferguson and Stein had felt his attitude towards Scotland was wrong, and Ferguson made his mind up not to take Hansen to the World Cup after Hansen pulled out of a game against England in April 1986, stating he had a knee injury.
Alan Hansen - MBE on 09:51 - Mar 19 with 987 views | Sharkey | I was wondering who could have 'blocked' him from the team. He won his caps between 1979 and 1987. Hansen was born in 1956. Alex Mcleish (born 1959) got his 77 caps between 1980 and 1993. David Narey (born 1956) got 35 caps between 1977 and 1989. Interesting that neither of these ever played outside Scotland, and both of them played for only one club. I wonder if there was a perception in Scotland that when it comes to defending, 'proper Scottish' players were best. George Burley (born 1956) only got 11 caps (1979-1982) - who kept him out of the team? [Post edited 19 Mar 9:53]

McLeish and Miller were Ferguson's Aberdeen centre-back partnership which would have had some influence in the decisions. I don't think he had blind loyalty though as he dumped Leighton at Man Utd. Narey was a full-back if i remember. Danny McGrain (Celtic) and Sandy Jardine (Rangers) generally kept Burley out of the team [Post edited 19 Mar 9:53]

If Wikipedia is to be believed, McGrain and Burley both played their last game for Scotland in 1982, and Jardine's last game was in 1979. It seems strange that Burley's last game was when he was only 26, -arguably in his prime. Most sites list Narey as a centre back, and some mention he sometimes played in midfield. He was very tall! https://www.scottishfa.co.uk/players/?pid=571&lid=1 [Post edited 19 Mar 10:09]

Burley was injured a lot, while they also had good full backs at the time. Hansen was often left out because he used to pick & choose games (bit like the Man U players when Ferguson was manager). Scotland definitely used to have a bias against Anglo-Scots (when both Celtic & Rangers had decent squads).

Alan Hansen - MBE on 17:50 - Mar 19 with 651 views | bluelagos | Wasn't it as simple as Miller and Mcleish being an established partnership at Aberdeen and various Scotland managers picking them? He was a superb footballer, the only center backs I can think who get close today would be Van Dijk and previously Kompany.
