Edrogan is following the lead set by Putin and Trump.

This is the biggest army in Europe outside those actually at war currently, folks.

Since the failed coup in 2016 Turkey has been gradually turning the screw in the classic authoritarian way ie press intimidation and pressure, compromised judiciary, suppression of protests etc.

It's kind of sliding backwards towards an autocracy more than being a total Trump-esque chaos.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

My partner is Turkish and her family in Istanbul are increasingly concerned with the shift towards Islamism in the country (they’re Muslim themselves). It’s such a shame as it is such a wonderful country.

Isn't it about which version of Islam is prevalent? Turkey is a diverse country but some Islamic governments are much more limiting and oppressive than others.

No, the opposition party, CHP, is secular

Ironically Erdogan is doing the same thing to Imamoglu that CHP (the opposition party) did to him which galvanised his surge for power 20 years ago

And probably no coincidence that his attacks on democracy have come at a time when minds are focused elsewhere:-

“ the reaction from Europe has been muted. European powers are hoping to enlist Turkey to participate in a peacekeeping force after a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, and to play a bigger role in European security more generally. America, for its part, has scarcely reacted at all. ”

No, it's about Islamism v secularism. The founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal, was very determined it would be a secular nation*. He set up the institutions of state to reinforce that and it was a strong tradition thereafter. However Erdogan is a (relatively mild**) Islamist and has been trying to undermine Kemal's legacy in that respect, supported by more conservative and religious voters in the provinces.

* In the previous regime, the Ottoman ruler had also been the Caliph ("successor"), notional leader of all muslims (in practice only Sunni ones and not even most of those).

** Compared with, say, the Wahabi in Saudi Arabia, who inspired al-Qaeda.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Their main fear is the country's secular traditions being eroded by an increasingly Islamist government.

It's a Muslim majority country, though it is constitutionally secular. Erdogan and his party are from an Islamist tradition.

Erdoğan wrote the Putin / Trump playbook. As a secular country of majority Islamic faith but observed tolerance of others, Turkey worked well. Erdoğan got the undereducated/ rural / agricultural vote out and is transforming the country towards an Islamic state; yes, moderate, but still Islamic.
