Trieste 21:00 - Mar 23 with 998 viewsDaninthecampo

Seems to be lots of well travelled people on here, so, my work schedule has changed and I have an extra free 24 hours, Has anyone been to Trieste? Is it worth visiting? Its not somewhere i'd ever plan to go but its very close to Ljubljana so thinking i should check it out while im there Or do I just do another day in Slovenia?
Thanks

I went in the mid eighties during one of the Cold War’s peaks of tension as a teen on a family holiday during a 3 week trip to Italy so my memory is a little fuzzy but I remember being quite excited after my dad told me the place was full of spies being right on the border with the iron curtain..Yugoslavia’s border being a little softer.I remember glimpsing the barbed wire fences along the fields and some hills outside the town/city..I recall it reminding me a little of Dunkirk planning wise…. I think I liked it … hope that helps.

I have been, but 20 years ago whilst on a school foreign exchange trip (just a day in Trieste as we were over the border in Austria).

I remember it being very pretty, with maybe a nice castle or something that we went to. Very classic Italian plaza with the town hall and a nice bit on the water. My sketchy memory tells me it was quite interesting from a history perspective because of its location/port and that it felt different to other parts of Italy I’ve been to.

We spent most of our time trying to find somewhere that would serve beer to 14 year olds (and eventually found an internet cafe that did) but I don’t suppose that’s going to be on your agenda.

I really liked Trieste and Ljubljana and you can’t go wrong with either in my opinion. Both great for a day of pottering, eating and drinking and just enjoying somewhere new.

I went in the middle of summer so not sure if it’s weather dependent especially, but I remember both being really pretty and found the journey between the two great too.

Weirdly the best Italian meal I’ve had was once we left Trieste and stopped in some small seaside town over the border.

If you can’t decide waste an hour on google images and tripadvisor looking at photos others have uploaded and see what takes your fancy. I find it gives me a reason to go somewhere if I know I want to see or do something

Had a family hoilday in Slovenia a few years ago, drove from northern Spain so it was a bit of a trek but absolutely love the country. Didn't go to Trieste so can't help there but did go to the Vintgar Gorge early one morning and then onto Lake Bled for lunch. About 40 minutes from Ljubljana and a superb day out. Do go early though.

Thanks but I'm definitely over 14!

Went there for a long weekend in October last year and would highly recommend.
Very pleasant town to wander round and just soak in the Italian food and drink (Birthplace of prosecco and Italy's coffee capital!).
Miramare castle and gardens are very pleasant and worth a visit

Would definitely recommend visit the giant cave (Grotta Gigante) on the outskirts.

Enjoy!

I went a few years (erm, 20-odd) back on the way to Slovenia. Stayed a night and found it quite dull tbh. I’d spend the time in Slovenia instead, which is great: Ljubljana itself, Piran on the Adriatic, Bled, Vintar Gorge or in the Julian Alps are all worth your time.

My family and I flew in and out of Trieste for a family holiday in Croatia in 2012. On our way back to the airport for the flight home we stopped off in the city of Trieste. I was intrigued by the place because of its Cold War spy connections. Unfortunately, it was tipping down with rain while we were there, but it looked nice from driving around the city centre and by the port.
I had a sense of humour failure trying and failing to operate a self-service pump at a petrol station to fill the hire car up before returning it so with that and the rain, no one in the family has a particularly fond memory of it but I would love to go back.
More recently I read a book called "Last days in old Europe" by Richard Bassett which includes an account of the author's time spent living in Trieste in the late 70s and in Ljubljana in the early 80s which is a pleasant read.
