Renewing your passport if it's out of date. Cost for that - £88  when you know you won't ever need it for the purpose it was intended for. Plus the £14 for DL renewal of course.
All because DVLA won't accept any electronic photo except one that's taken purely for passports. Absolutely ridiculous when they have driving licence photo taken only 3 years ago. |  |

I know you live in the sticks so it might not be practical but if you go to a post office which offers the service they can do it for you without a passport. I think it cost me £25. My passport has expired. |  |

I had this problem too. I was 68 and my license had expired.
The PO will give you a form which is quite straightforward to complete.
You have to send money and photos to DVLA with the form.
That means a cheque or postal order.
I couldn't find my old check book and it all slipped my mind.
Long story short, at 70, DVLA wanted me to re-apply - it's free.
You send them 2 photos and the form - same as the PO one - and you get a license that lasts for 3 years.
I'm not suggesting you drive without a valid license as that's unlawful.
No-one asked to see my license for years apart from when I voted last July.
If you have a valid MOT cert. and Insurance then you will pass all ANPR checks.

The complication apparently is that it requires a 10-year renewal as well as the 70+ one which means new photos which I wanted to do electronically (have done such photos in the past year for other formal agencies). | |

Turned out that unfortunately this PO method is not an option where you're required to renew both a 70+ licence *and* a 10-year photo licence. Nor can it be done online.
The only option if you need both those is to complete the D1 form and send it by post + a new passport style photo + return your current licence - if you're returning the latter, you don't need to include any other form of ID such as original birth cert, despite what the rather confusing form says. Or at least that's what one rep at the DVLA said - I've usually spoken with 2 different people and got 2 different answers each time. It's foc for over 70s :)
For anyone else going through this, again contrary to what one rep told me, you don't have to leave the house to go to a physical passport booth - there are many apps and companies now who enable you to do it online via smartphone. I used Passport Booth Online who were excellent - first one I took they didn't think would pass muster, so was asked to retake it facing window in daylight & told not to worry about the background, they would sort that. Indeed they did, swapped dark background for a white one & I received the 8 prints in post 7 days later + 4 digital images for a total of about £7.
DVLA are a 'mare though compared with Passport Office (decided to renew mine anyway) who have been a quick and easy doddle - much less fussy about the photo, surprisingly, and 17 days from application to receipt, superb tracking & updates via email & text - well done to them. | |
