Relegation clauses 16:17 - Apr 14 with 1712 viewsLeoMuff

Anyone heard any whispers players other than Delap (if true) hVe a relegation clause ? I am surprised we allowed one for a striker who up to that point had only scored 8 goals in the championship. So if he had one maybe others have too.

The only Muff in Town.

I assume the only way we could get Delap in was by agreeing to the relegation clause in the first place. If it came down to agreeing to it or he went elsewhere then, given how difficult we were finding it to bring a striker in, it’s understandable why we agreed to it.

I haven’t heard anything about other players having similar clauses but would guess it’s a distinct possibility.

Most of our summer signings were from clubs below us in the Championship and so they probably didn’t have as much move to negotiate as what Delap did. I’ll be surprised whether the club would have agreed to such a clause for them.

Most will likely have relegation clauses - in many case to reduce wages on the event of us being relegated.

Some may have release clause, some of which will be linked to relegation and also possibly some straightforward releases triggered by an offer at a particular level.

Always worth remembering, just because there is a clause it's not a guarantee that a player will be off if a matching offer comes in. Certain players might be quite happy continuing here under McKenna rather than taking a risk elsewhere. It does mean they might be able to negotiate an improved contract in order to stay, of course. If it's a PL team that comes knocking, obviously very hard to compete with that.

Probably even a case that wages stay at a level with large survival bonuses in for some.
J.Clarke etc… wouldn’t have taken a huge amount to get him in from a championship team
