I have around 500 records, but I’m tired of them being stored upright in my IKEA unit with doors. I also don’t like the fact it’s hard to admire/flick through them.

I’m in talks with a lovely chap on Etsy who has offered to customise the below by adding a hinged lid to it (worried about sun damage). This feels like a great item and a way to flick through the records like I’m at a shop.

My question is, does this way of storing records damage them at all? I’ve only ever stored them on shelves with their spines facing out. Realise this is just the reverse of that, so it may be a silly question, but they’re about the only thing of value I own, so would like to make sure.

Thank you!

I would have thought they'd be fine, as long as the angle they're stored at isn't too acute. I often wince in record shops when I see LPs presented like this, with punters banging a large stack of them backwards against a few at the back. Anywhere near 90 degrees and it shouldn't be any different to storing them spine outwards.

Great to know there's another vinyl geek on here! I think there a few others too.
Are you a hifi geek too?
I like the look of the shelving. It has that record shop chic!
The only thing I'd say is to back up Carlo when they say about trying to keep records upright. Too much of an angle for too long and there is a small risk you might get some warping.
It does look really good though!

I have a unit from ikea for vinyls on the shelves below, singles and cds above and the record player and amp at the top. I'll see if they still do it, looks smart but not sure if you could get in 500 albums. My collection is now down to a measly 150 lps after years of travelling and unexplained losses.

The ikea kallax was the go-to. Not sure if still available.

My only issue with the unit in the OP is its very big for a limited capacity. But I guess you could keep a selection fo the most used stuff in there if its a big collection and doesnt all fit.

Not sure Id put a lid on it. Get sleeves for the records instead.

Totally fine if you only have around 500 records but would take up too much space if your collection significantly increases.

The Kallax/Expedits are definitely the best cheap way to go for larger collections. I have 8 of them 😆.

Yep, just looked it up and is indeed a kallax. There are loads of sizes and configurations. Mine is great for what I need and space available, I see they call it a tv bench and the base is slightly different as I probably have an old version.

Thanks all!

I have a Kallax, but wanted them to be more on display. I know someone recommended sleeves, but I’m still worried about fading coming through. The space thing is a valid point though…

I have my favourite album covers framed on the wall, and change them around. This is in a holiday home property though, great talking point for some guests but my family like them less.

I've got mine in lots of these:

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/835942679/vinyl-record-flip-rack-storage-display

I am continually worrying about them warping. There are only about 25-30 in each b one but they slip down sometimes and lean at more of an angle.

However I have read that actually they are more robust than we think.

Am I right to panic?!

I'd be more concerned about the price.

£238 for that??

Think about getting a friendly chippy to knock something up to your specification..

BTW - Nice stash Bluebeat

Edit... I've just had a look at some other sh1t for sale, I don't suppose it's the worse price in the world.

First off, I really like that storage unit, and for a bit of oak furniture it's not stupidly pricey. Plus part of the reason you're looking at it is to show off your collection a bit, even if just to yourself, so get the storage unit that looks best! As long as you keep each section fullish, and keep out of the sun, then it'll all be fine.

Secondly, as we're showing off collections/storage.......

This is a little unit I made myself, to store a decent number of records plus amp and turntable.

This is my entry into the IKEA Kallax storage category, most of the vinyl here is breakbeat 12" that I used to play in clubs, and now play on my radio show.

500 records, nice work.

Don’t wish to derail your thread, but what turntables are people using?
I have a Technics 1210 (90s vintage, so an original), and a Audio Technica Soundburger in my conservatory/ smoking room.

I've got a pair of silver technics 1200 mk2's for my DJing, and a fairly basic Project turntable in my downstairs set up.

Wish I still had a pair, but some idiot broke into my old house in Tooting and stole 1, yes… just one!
They are bloody heavy though.
Did steal other stuff too, XBox, games etc.

I'm working late - and in my office I have a Marantz amp and turntable doing nothing. In fact they are only here because the Mrs wanted them out of the house.

They were my life

You know anyone who might be interested?

In my basement I have a Rega 1 with a Marantz amp.

But these days I am always drawn to my vintage Pioneer receiver which I have paired with a Project RPM1

The amp is a beauty.

I would say though, that if your Mrs is imposing on things you love, there is a bigger issue to address...

Its going to be such a relief when I escape mine!
