I have around 500 records, but I’m tired of them being stored upright in my IKEA unit with doors. I also don’t like the fact it’s hard to admire/flick through them.
I’m in talks with a lovely chap on Etsy who has offered to customise the below by adding a hinged lid to it (worried about sun damage). This feels like a great item and a way to flick through the records like I’m at a shop.
My question is, does this way of storing records damage them at all? I’ve only ever stored them on shelves with their spines facing out. Realise this is just the reverse of that, so it may be a silly question, but they’re about the only thing of value I own, so would like to make sure.
You got 5k worth of kit there lucan. You got speakers too? Probably a rare pair of Cambridge Audio tucked away in a dusty corner somewhere!
Of course I have speakers!.....
....Although of course they aren't being used.
Well, I tell a lie - I have always loved the look of them so when Lady Lucan got fed up with the table and amp I persuaded her that the speakers look great with a pot plant on them - so they remain in my living room.
To me they were the best thing about the system but in truth I'm not sure they are worth much.
They are brand Realistic circa 1970's and they are about 70cm tall.

Realistic stuff was made for Radio Shack outlets. I had a Realistic CB in the 80s!
Interesting fact: was actually manufactured by Harmon Kardon. I have the HK speaker option in my car. Much improved on the factory BMW speaker option.

He does run a record label
I’m in my 70s, you expect me to keep up with everything?😂
I loved my Technics tuner, amp and turntable back in the day (1970s vintage, sadly no longer in my possession, tho I have a collection of about 100 vinyl LPs in the attic, plus about 100 singles in specialist cases. Not been played in probably 40+ years because no deck - should get one really.
Thank you. It’s 90% made up of early 2000’s emo, so perhaps reserve your congrats..
Nothing wrong with that. US/Canadian rock can be hit or miss, but there were some great bands then. From Grunge to New Metal, to Emo/Screamo - the noughties would have been a far less creative place without the likes of MCR, Alexisonfire, Deftones or Fall Out Boy. Where is Callis these days 😁

Radio Shack was the Tandy house brand. The parent company was TRS- formed out of a merger of the Tandy and Radio Shack companies in the 60s. In the UK Tandy was used as the name of the shop, and Radio Shack for their own label electronic goods.

Some big hitters there! Was listening to Deftones today actually!

....one lengthwise on the floor with openings out, and the other on top with the openings facing upwards so you can use as a rack to flick through (front panel would protect the sleeves at the front from sunlight too) Would be room for about 640 records (allowing a few future purchases!)
EDIT: Or just a 2x4 Kallax on its side, and buy 8 of these... DOUBLE EDIT: Read that the OP mentioned in a later post that already has Kallax units... So just the storage box idea then...
...to use as pull-out drawers to flick through the records.
I have no affiliation with IKEA...Homebase used to make identical sized units and storage boxes which is actually where mine are from!
As others have mentioned, if you want extra display there are nice LP sized frames you can buy. I've been dealing in vinyl for about 25 years (tracked a few hard to find items for TWTD'ers in the past), so occasionally end up with sleeves with trashed or no vinyl in them which end up in mine.

500 records, nice work.
Don’t wish to derail your thread, but what turntables are people using? I have a Technics 1210 (90s vintage, so an original), and a Audio Technica Soundburger in my conservatory/ smoking room.
I'm a knees deep hifi geek and run a Linn LP12. Been into hifi since the late 80s and have spent thousands over the years. I don't say that to boast. It's more about my love of hifi. When mates were spending money on nice cars, I'd ride around in a £100 banger for a year, then scrap it. My money went on records and hifi. Probably got 1200 to 1500 records. I have a cull once a year to raise a few funds but there isn't too much left I'd be happy to see go!
Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Project turntables pretty much rule the roost when it comes to entry level turntables. Loads of options out there, but you could be up and running for around £500 all in. Richer Sounds would always be my go to advice for people looking to start out.

Oh wow. I didn't realise the turntable was worth quite that. Interesting that it looks the same amp as mine underneath.
I always loved the blue lights when everyone else was green!
You can always sell "sold as seen". Not sure where you live, but there may be a hifi dealer who could give it the once over or at least point you in the direction of someone who specialises in vintage hifi. If you did want to sell but get back into hifi in a simpler way, there are some great budget blue tooth turntables out there. Hook up to some modest active bookshelf speakers and voila!

Cheers. Had a couple of good things from Richer Sounds, after my go-to retailer, Audio Projects in Headingley, sadly closed its doors.
Got a pair of second-hand massive floor-standing Linn speakers, over 1m in height from the latter for £500 in the late 70s, which I still have, think they must be worth a small fortune now - they're incredible, enough power for a warehouse never mind my small living room! Mostly use for DAB radio & CD collection now via a Myryad integrated box.

For an amp I'd definitely have a look on Ebay as you can get some decent second hand amps at a low price.
I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Thank you! I actually currently have a Kallax but I fitted doors on them to stop the sunlight damaging them. It’s the lack of a lid which is still the sticking point for me.
The seller has kindly said he’ll add a couple of extra units to the display and make them deeper so it will hold around 600.
I’m just a fuss-pot about the sun damage. Without sounding like a complete helmet, I have quite of lot of super rare records, and they’re about the only thing I care about of the place burned down (except my cat and season ticket obvs).
Whilst we’re at it, anyone on Discogs here and want to be friends? I’m ‘alionshead’.

I wouldn't sell it sold as seen, knowing there are a few issues as I kind of treat people as I would like to be treated. I think it's a karma thing.
There was a place down St Johns Rd who specialised in this sort of thing, not sure if they are still there but I'll het the hippy at work to look at it first.
To be honest, I don't really want to sell them. I would rather leave to the grandkids so they can say "Look at that pile of sh1te Grandude left us, what the hell are we going to do with that.

Can I volunteer to be one of those grandkids?

All this modern stuff! I am the very proud owner of a 1954 Rockola Fireball Comet jukebox in working order. That’s how vinyl records are supposed to sound.

I longed for, eventually got a Dansette like this, early 60s - was so thrilled to get my first record (Kenny Lynch, Up on the Roof) & play it - still love that song -
