How much of that is due to teams able to bring on better, stronger players and how much is not having an adequate Plan C after 70 mins?

I think it's certainly the former but the latter is probably due to us not having in relative terms as strong a bench in the Premier League as we had in the Championship. Putting it another way, I don't there is any game this season where the changes we made improved us, and I don't think that has anything to do with tactics.

And how much is down to the whole team's fitness fading in the latter part of much more high intensity games in the Prem, during which we've often had to do a lot of defending/chasing out of possession?

It’s hardly surprising is it? Given the quality of subs that most teams can bring on against us it’s no wonder we get overrun in the second half! Let’s face it most of them would be in our starting 11 given the chance.

And that squad advantage is what opponents would have thought about us when we were beating most of them when we bought our way out of League One.

I think that's largely what these two tables demonstrate. Algy got a down arrow but he wasn't wrong either. In L1 and in The Champ our strength in depth was a massive part of how we played, the strength we could bring on in the last 20 or 30 against tiring sides could blow them away, or reverse a negative scoreline. In the Prem, we've not had that and that's a key part of McKenna's tactics. I suspect we'll see a summer of trying to retain the likes of Omari, but also adding additional strength ready for the Premier League again and likely a better policy of international recruitment. The effect of financial power is enormous at all levels of the modern game. It is a plain fact that Ipswich Town were a very big club by League One standards, so we were always going to be able to hire better players (assuming managerial and recruitment competence). Upper end of middling in the Champ and well behind in the Prem, if you take into account spending and squad development over several years. The fact we were stuck in L1 for an extended period even with the club's size and financial strength highlights what an important reorganistion has taken place.

I would say in our case financial power changed massively just over 4 years ago. The Evans years and the Gamechanger years are hugely different.

Tho at L1 level, with its financial constraints, it was more a matter of fulfilling potential which was already there. For example, filling Portman Rd on a regular basis unlocked the ability to inject more funds by the owners (by reducing losses). Evans could have done similar, by hiring the right people and increasing fan engagement. But he didn't want to, or perhaps know how. While you can say we used financial muscle to power our way out of L1, that wasn't the case in the Champ and we still achieved outstanding success. But in the Prem, we have to an extent outrun our resource base (while still doing better than Leicester and Southampton who came up with us).

And losing attacking options from the bench due to injury. Not sure there's been any point when we've had all of them fit. Certainly think we needed another number nine to augment Delap when Hirst was out and the recruitment of Enciso and Philogene in January obviously indicate the management felt we needed additional options in that area.

We needed to do a lot better at home in order to stay up, of course. However, the first v second half differential is massively more pronounced away from home. Home: 1st half: 16 points (17th) 2nd half: 13 points (19th) Away: 1st half: 21 points (11th) 2nd half: 9 points (20th)

This will have been a huge contribution - we’ve not had the bench we needed, partially due to injuries and also less time / money to build the depth of the squad.

I think it's fair to say that the 5 subs rule has massively favoured bigger, more established clubs. If they cut it back to 3, would we have been blown away so many times in the last 20 minutes?

That intensity is the key. Last year we were just that bit better in the last 15 than other teams and got quite a lot of criticism for being 'lucky'. This year we are second best and bemoan our luck. I suspect the training levels were not quite right given the amount of injuries. In an attempt to match that intensity we might be overdoing things with players that are not quite ready for that level - yet. Not quite sure what else we could have done by shifting formations, strategy in the final 15 this year. If we're not at that level, I'm not sure many results would have changed.
