THIS is what is wrong with British politics and media.

It clearly WAS a dog whistle comment by the Reform fellow. She now has to apologise for saying it, because saying it is claimed to be minimising the issue. Which it plainly wasnt. It is possible for a person to be appalled by the grooming gangs issue, taking it seriously, and also pointing out that Reform use it as a dog whistle.

But even labour are being apologetic for it, because of the atmosphere and twisted logic we are working with.

so quite possibly the biggest scandal in the uk for decades - thousands of vulnerable children being raped and the police and public authorities failing to act. a systematic failure of the state to protect vulnerable children - that has already been established by the local enquiries. the police turning a blind eye. we then have the latest channel 4 documentary which is absolutely shocking. the exchange on question time was:

“I don’t know if you saw that documentary on Channel 4 about rape gangs?“

Lucy Powell: “Oh, we want to blow that little trumpet now, do we? Let’s get that dog whistle out, shall we, yeah?“

that is a shocking error of judgement - downplaying and dismissing a child abuse scandal - of course she had to apologise. raising a scandal involving the systematic failure of the state over decades is not 'a dog whistle'. jeez.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

WTF. Did she actually say that on live TV?

I haven’t seen the program but I read that one 12 year old was covered in bites from head to toe and her knickers were full of seamen yet she was referred to as an attention seeker - or something like that?

I read that the program had been aired but then as there was nothing discussed on here I thought it had been pulled.

I should have known better.

… ….and it is this that is actually the problem with todays politics.

i don't think starmer has personally culpability with regard to the scandal itself. as dpp he pursued prosecutions. but the failure to hold a national enquiry will come back to bite him - it smacks of the state protecting its back.

It's a far right conspiracy proven to be false, but consistently spread that Starmer "let off paedos" etc.

What's more worrying is that the term "grooming gang" is racialsed so people immediately link it with Muslims. When there are gangs of all sorts being caught over the years. It's the same cyclical issue with "boat people" vs Ukranians or Hong Kongers being granted a place here.

She's massively out of order for saying that, it's a unprofessional slip of the mask. But it does belie what must be a point of frustration for Labour too.

It's an absolute dog whistle in that context, though.

It's in no way about concern for the kids and for justice, and all about the faith (perceived or otherwise) of the brown-skinned perpetrators.

yes gangs of all sorts have been caught over the years. but we need a national enquiry to establish why in dozens of cities gangs were instead allowed to continue and the authorities including the police turned a blind eye. it is the failure by the state to act on a massive scale that is scandal here. we need establish why, and why the same pattern was repeated in city after city. why did so many police forces systematically fail in these cases and why was the same pattern seen across social service departments? why did civil institutions appear systematically not to care. what radicalises people is the sense that there is a cover up - transparency is the only thing that detoxifies scandals like this. like hillsborough there'll be a proper enquiry at some point, starmer holding out against it now is an error.

Indeed.

There is one reason and one reason only, that Reform raise it.

Same reason that Badenich made such a fuss about enquiries (which had already taken place in many instances) whilst brushing over the fact that she had done bug ger all about actioning the recommendations made in previous ones.

Once again it's racist media mouthpieces pushing the line of a cover up etc. It's almost like victims are collateral too often, which is sickening.

I also think it's a dangerous, potentially insulting comparison with Hillsbrough which was a single event. Do we need an inquiry into why so many paedophiles and sex offenders were being shielded within the EDL etc too?

it's about the systematic failure of the state to act to protect vulnerable children in specific circumstances. the local enquiries have already proven that the police and social services failed to act in specific cases where gangs of pakistani heritage men were abusing white working class children. read the reports. what we need to know is why the authorities failed to act across so many cities and failed to protect thousands of vulnerable children in similar circumstances.

i find it amazing that people seem to object to a national enquiry to establish exactly why the state failed on this scale and in these specific circumstances. what are you afraid an enquiry will decide?

yes, the debate about local reviews v. a national enquiry is very well known. we need a national enquiry - why did the exact same failure happen across dozens of cities and across multiple police forces and social services departments. the comparison with hillsborough is that successive flawed and limited enquiries failed to provide answers and the full enquiry that people had always called for eventually came along. the same will happen with this.

my response is that they are in no way alternatives. you can, and should, implement previous recommendations and at the same time hold a proper national enquiry to hold failing state institutions to account. you can do both. thousands of vulnerable children have been raped - the police, councils and social services have failed to act - who has been held to account? who has been prosecuted for those failures? who has resigned? why in this particular case are some people unwilling to even ask these questions?

So it's an opinion based on a sense of revenge or restitution? People with the experience and insight say one isn't it needed, but learning from the one that's already had happened is.

That it is likely to waste money and cause more harm, but you don't accept that? Your own comments focus on race and treatment of race too over victims, which seems telling in this instance. While I think Powell is wrong here, you seem to be embosying the root of her frustrations over and over.

This is why there is little progress on the issue. These conspiratorial notions over rationality aren't beneficial. You seem to be missing the fact that so many factors and failures compounded in different communities and in different ways.

Had we had enough funding, training and resources in place the chances are more could have been done. In the same way attitudes towards victims in the police were shown to be a big factor, fixing our communities and giving people safer spaces and opportunities will reduce the opportunity for people to fall through the cracks - that goes for child exploitation in drugs and gangs too.

As far as naming and shaming goes, wouldn't it be cheaper just to set up a website listing the people involved and what they did? That sounds like it would satisfy you.

If you want to know one of the reasons why these crimes against working class girls were ignored, go on social media and look at the disgusting online abuse given to Angela Rayner, often by Reform supporters.

- Muslim rapes gangs were laughed off as 'Muslamic Ray Guns' , on this forum. It was brushed aside as racist nonsense, and an opportunity to mock a northern working class man with a funny accent. That aged really well.

- The whole country knows why Starmer is desperate not to have a national independent inquiry. A proper one that is.

What about CofE rape gangs?

Such abuse is not just confined to immigrants, and those of the Muslim faith. To peddle the trope of 'Muslim Rape Gangs' shows the truth behind your faux concern.
