Is still calling it the “Champions League” become a joke? 09:45 - May 9 with 580 views | melbs_itfc | Each season there are multiple teams from all the top leagues that qualify for the Uefa Champions League. Whilst the competition’s format seems to regularly expand with the aim of including even more teams and games. No doubt with the purpose of increased revenue for the clubs and Uefa alike. However, next season incredibly there will be SIX teams that will enter the competition from the English Premier League, including whichever of Man United and Spurs that win the Europa League (currently 15th and 16th respectively in the EPL). So realistically, we all know the UCL is moving closer to a Uefa Super League in all but name. So why continue with this charade of still calling it the “Champions League” and just be done with it, rebrand, and call it something that actually resembles what it has now evolved to become?

If the old rules still applied Man City would have been in from thr knock out stage.

Is still calling it the “Champions League” become a joke? on 09:55 - May 9 with 524 views | Vaughan8 | Why is this suddenly becoming an issue? It's not been just the "champions" for so long now it's all a bit odd how now its being discussed (not blaming you, just its all in the media too). Is it because Spurs/Man Utd are going to get in despite them being hopeless in the league? I've disliked it when 4 of the big leagues got in it. Its basically pushing the "Minnow" teams out. How are they ever supposed to be able to compete? But we know its all for money and more now to save there becoming a "super league" Its a bit embarassing for the other leagues that out teams in the bottom 6 can both get to the final. I also don't like it when people say things like "Nottingham Forest won the Champions league". They didn't. they won the European cup which lets face it, was a totally different competition to te money making thing it is now. Did we win the Europa League? Most certainly not!

It's because next year there will be SIX English teams in the Champions League, which is almost one third of the flipping Premier League. It's so much more ridiculous than it used to be, and is surely just the European Intergalactic Bobbins League by another name.

It depends what you mean by uncompetitive. In the pre-Champions League era there there were some surprise winners. And if it had stayed like that, there would have been less of an inevitability about the teams whose financial position was reinforced year after year by European TV money. It has an impact on the domestic game as well as the European competition itself. But regardless of the quality of the tournament, the OP's question was about the name. It shouldn't be called the Champions League, it should be called the European Super League, because that's what it is (except that I don't consider it very super). They even have a quasi league table for the group rounds these days.

Their way of having a "European League" without actually having to have one. [Post edited 9 May 13:08]

It was first called the "European Champions Clubs' Cup" in 1955, although in the inaugural season the participants were selected by French football magazine L'Equipe & only 7 of the 16 clubs were national champions. Unsurprisingly, the name was quickly shortened to "European Cup". Funnily enough, in the second season all the clubs were national champions allow they bent the rules to allow Real Madrid to play (sound familiar?). I personally am not remotely offended by the name - much more so by the names of pointless, tin pot trophies such as the "European Super Cup" and, like others, by the Football League calling its second division "League One".
