Delap can't head the ball 14:10 - May 11 with 1005 viewsjungleboy

Liam Delap's goals for ITFC have not been headers. And when the ball is booted up to him he rarely wins heading duels. Unlike our great centre forwards such as Ray Crawford and Paul Mariner, Delap's striking skills are seriously incomplete.

He is just complete raw talent, personified. No doubt he will become an absolutely excellent footballer in the future, but so many parts of his game need tweaking.

It's the first thing I compare Delap and Hirst on - Hirst can, and does, score headers. I haven't seen Delap head the ball accurately for 97% of his headed attempts. I may be remembering wrong but there may have been one that led to a good save, and another that hit the crossbar. I can't remember much else in terms of his aerial threat in the opposition's box.

Liam Delap has probably been the brightest highlight at the club this season despite being new at the club, just 22 years old and in his first top-flight season. To compare him at this stage of his career with probably the best two strikers in the club's history when playing for trophy-winning sides, beggars belief.

What's going on, is it "have a pop at Liam" week, or are we preparing for his obvious departure with ridiculous "Meh, always preferred George Hirst anyway" and "Couldn't head a ball like Mariner" comments to lessen the pain when he does leave?

That's like saying "when pondering who is the best right-back in the country, the first thing I compare Trent Alexander-Arnold , Kyle Walker and Axel Tuanzebe on is who's best at Hungry, Hungry Hippos - Axel is the best RB at Hungry, Hungry Hippos in the country and has titles to prove it."

Why would you overlook the players' injury records, the number of goals scored or their market value?

Chances to score were few and far between yesterday, but of the two headers that they shared between them, Delap's probably tested their keeper more anyway.

97%, exactly how do you come to that particular percentage, show your workings.

Yes, seems to be a major concern for all those clubs willing to part with £30m to sign him, but I’m sure they’ll take your analysis into consideration

He is far from a complete player, in many ways he is still better suited to the wing but by never buying a 3rd striker, it's not an experiment we ever going to test sadly

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

1) I wasn't talking about headers from yesterday, but throughout the season. I wasn't concise enough about that, but all season I have been extremely frustrated with our crossing attempts and attempts on target aerially. It really does irk me when Hirst connects with a header in the box and scores whilst Delap struggles with it, and it makes me question why we are trying to aerially cross the ball rather than drill it into the area whenever Delap is lurking.

2) I'm not worried about injury records because we've had an awful time with injuries this season anyway.

3) None of Delap's 12 goals have come from headers this season, and he has started, and played, the majority of minutes this season compared to Hirst, who has 5 goals (3 PL, 2 FA Cup), 3 of which that have come from a header. It's a reasonable comparison to make.

I looked into this earlier this season, Delap has scored two career headers I think - one for Hull (assisted by Greaves) and one for England U21s (against France in the mad 5-3). Both were very simple chances. I agree that he's not brilliant on aerial duels but he is brilliant at making something of them after if they are contested but not cleared.

Hirst's goal involvement per minute this season better than Delap's and this bodes well for next season.

1) I can't remember too many instances when Delap has even been lurking, it's often been Delap himself that's taken the ball out of our own half. We have among the lowest possession stats and ball in the box stats that Delap hasn't had the luxury of being able to lurk.

2) Hirst, despite rarely coming on to the pitch before 75 minutes of play has still been unavailable for 12 of our 36 league fixtures to date but you are less concerned "about injury records because we've had an awful time with injuries this season anyway". I'd rather have a striker who scores goals (with or without his head) than one that's not available to play at all.

3) It MIGHT be a reasonable comparison to make if headed goal were worth more than those scored with feet, but they're not.

Anyway, not looking for a scrap, I just think it's a rather odd thing to pull up a player for, especially when that player has scored the greatest share of his teams goals from any club in the EPL this season at the time of writing.

I like Hirst a lot, but the fact that he has been unavailable for 12 of this season's 36 league matches despite playing for an average of 21m10s per every league match he does play, does not bode well for next season. Delap on the other hand plays an average of 73m32s per match that he plays.

Apart from getting in the way, which risks a penalty being awarded, Delap is of little value to the team when defending corners, or free kicks lobbed into the box.
