I just couldn't face the round trip from North Manchester, the inevitable defeat knowing that the journey home I'd be travelling "with" the Bolton fans. I didn't even look at the score until "full time" -> 3-3 extra time being played At the end of it all, rang a mate at the game who was by then on the pitch and the sound coming down the phone was hair raising, even now typing this.

Happy St. Jim's Day Everybody. 25 years ago today. on 08:55 - May 18 with 288 views | Churchman | I’ve seen a number of the memorable games, but I don’t think I witnessed anything more extraordinary than that night. We didn’t even play very well. But somehow, it started with an electric atmosphere that got more and more intense as the bizarre action commenced. From the despair of oh no, not again to what’s happening here, joy, despair and so on. On the way back to the house, my dad and I for the first time ever didn’t say a word. There was nothing to say. The noise by the end was swirling around the ground as Bolton finally lost the plot. When Clapham slapped in the penalty everyone knew we’d done it. Reuser in typical fashion killed it and the place was already going utterly berserk. Pitch invasion? Ohhh yes. It’s possibly the most amazing game (certainly night game) I’ve ever been to, including the brilliant Southampton one last season.

You should have joined us online in the early days of dial-up, which kept losing connectivity so then there was the "beeeee-bvuuuuu-bong-bong" tone, often followed by the engaged signal ... ! My best, most memorable, riveting/excruciating/fun 3 hours ever on the net, to this day. "What's happening?" "They've scored" "Have we scored?" "We've scored" "Oh no" "Giant Haystacks" "Yellow card" "Yellow card" "Yellow card" "Yellow card" "Stop repeating yourself" "No, another yellow card" "What's happening?" "Half-Nelson" "Goal" "Who for?" "Aaaargh!" "Scrum" "Goal" "What's happening, have we scored?" "JIM - YEEEESS!" "Bodyslam" "Red card" "Red card" "Stop repeating yourself" "No, another red card" "What's happening? "Knight's seeking asylum" "What's happening" "Dunno - have we ... have we ..? I was actually seated in Churchmans in the corner next to the Cobbold stand towards the front. When the Bolton players started chasing the ref, the crowd (and me) were baying for the Bolton players to push him over or hit him given that’d be game over. They came damn close to doing it too. It was hilarious. Then at the end, the second red card was pretty close to us, the Bolton players (Elliott) diving in from behind. God, he got dogs abuse. I think they amassed something like nine bookings and two red cards. They deserved every one of them and more. They viewed us as soft, piled in accordingly and paid for it.
