Hey, Blueas! You were asking when the gangs would be smashed... on 17:28 - May 20 by The_Flashing_Smile | According to Blueas, this story "shows the last govt were on the ball" |
They must have been. You don't get: "He arrived in the UK on a small boat in 2022 after spending five years in jail in Italy for attempted drug smuggling. He applied for asylum in the UK but never received a decision. That meant he had been in legal limbo, neither facing removal nor being granted permission to stay ... He was arrested in 2023 after Italian security services looked into satellite phones being used by migrants on Mediterranean crossings from Libya to Europe, in particular Italy. They found that some handsets which were being used to call the country's coastguard had also been connecting during the journey to a British mobile number. The NCA linked that mobile phone to Ebid and then bugged his home to record evidence. The agency found he was involved in a number of smuggling operations, transporting thousands of men, women and children, often in dangerously overcrowded fishing vessels." without being on the ball, do you?

Yep, very difficult if not impossible to do, and would also take time, but at least trying to dismantle the gangs is a plan that makes sense (and has had some successes as you've demonstrated). Blueas was asking why theses gangs hadn't been smashed a few weeks into the new government (which was obviously ridiculous). You've shown some successes here, but no doubt they won't count because Belgian intelligence helped. The Tory plan of "Stop the boats" wasn't even a plan, that's just restating the problem. HOW?! It would be like if McKenna was asked what his tactics were for West Ham and he replied, "Win the game".

In this case the investigation and arrests would have been under whatever structures the Tories put in place, so he’s got a point. They certainly weren’t on the ball though. Not least because of taking us out of the EU and thus the Dublin Regulation meaning we lost the option to return asylum seekers back into EU countries where they first claimed asylum. That’s a huge number (about half of them) and why some genius came up with the idea for the illegal Rwanda plan, wasting about £700M of tax payers money. Wasting money seemed to be their forte.

It shows the NCA have been on the ball, leading to today's sentencing. Not sure it shows the previous government being on the ball. In fact your first sentence is the pertinent one. "He arrived on a small boat in 2022 after spending five years in jail in Italy for attempted drug smuggling. He applied for asylum in the UK but never received a decision." I would've thought the decision would be pretty obvious! There's nothing there that displays being "on the ball"!

The majority of those who continually call out ‘stop the boats’ are referring to people trafficking across the English Channel, they have no interest in what happens in the Mediterranean. Not sure this should ever have been investigated here, Italy should have sort our assistance in putting a case together and then sort extradition. The annoying aspect, as far as I am concerned , the failure, under Tory administration, not to have simple deported him back to Egypt. His asylum application should have been rejected once his criminal record was known.

The structure under the Tories enabled him to stay despite arriving on a small boat after spending five years in an Italian jail for drug smuggling. The subsequent investigation leading to today's sentence has happend under both governments. So no, I don't think he has much of a point.

I rate “stop the boats” as highly as I do “smash the gangs”. Both impossible to do, do undeliverable and setting yourself up to fail. I’m not sure whether it casts the politicians or the public in the worst light. Are they gaslighting us, or is the public actually that stupid that we can only read three words at a time? The only good Three Word Slogan I can think of is “Hands. Face. Space.”. So I suppose they can be useful. The ‘smash the gangs’, ‘stop the boats’, ‘take back control’, ‘get Brexit done’ stuff is all meaningless rubbish.

You earlier said "no little boats involved", are you happy to admit you were wrong and/or hadn't read the story? It's pretty sad, if true, that people have no interest in people dying in small boats in ANY sea. And many of them were headed to the UK anyway, so I'm not sure the whys and the wherefores are all that important. People want to stop all illegal immigration, don't they? I'm not sure what sea it is has any relevance (other than media headlines). But yes, I agree his asylum application should have been a pretty straightforward rejection in the first place.

Whether it can be done or not, I do think “smash the gangs” highlights a plan to tackle the problem that makes sense. Whether or not it's just another meaningless slogan remains to be seen, but there have been some successes dismantling gangs, so it's not been completely fruitless (like stop the boats).

Yeah, sure. Had his claim been processed quickly we could have prevented his offending in the first place. Agreed there. The backlogs were getting silly (as were backlogs in the judiciary, NHS waiting lists, etc. - another Tory forte along with pudding money up the wall (or siphoning it to mates and family). I don’t know whether we’ve speeded up the process these days. No idea. It needs to be much quicker.

Um, I'm afraid telling someone not to respond, when you've quite demonstrably been proved wrong, is not how debate works. It's the debating equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and going lalala when shown to be incorrect. You said there were "no little boats involved". The story is littered with mentions of the little boats involved. I really don't know what else to say.
