It's very possible that his performances here as a 19-year-old in amongst pretty much the worst team we've ever fielded didn't always make him look as good a player as he clearly is.
It's very possible that he's vastly improved as a player by virtue of playing in teams in the six years since then that were considerably better than ours was.

It wasn’t a thing.
Maybe a bit of criticism that he wasn’t good enough to carry off a hairdo that looked like a seagull had taken a dump on him….and maybe a suggestion he would never make it at Chelsea…..but generally he was seen as what he was. A young CB out on loan, thrown into a poor side. | | | |
