Burnt myself with Sulphuric Acid today... 01:11 - May 29 with 1731 viewsHugoagogo_Reborn

Only a tiny drop of industrial drain cleaner, splashed on my t-shirt. I'd doused water on it within 10 seconds of feeling the burn, but it is now a 3rd degree burn requiring follow up hospital care.

It literally melted a 6 inch hole in my t-shirt, but thankfully just a 1p sized hole in my stomach skin, due to me being right next to a cold water tap.

Please, if you use industrial chemicals, don't underestimate their danger. It's shocking how corrosive that stuff is.

sounds nasty, glad for you it was not a few inches lower ...

Shouldn't you be wearing PPE if working with that stuff? A t-shirt doesn't seem to be the right thing to be wearing if working with corrosives.

They supplied industrial rubber gloves, but the bottle had no mention of other PPE requirements. Needless to say, my boss has said not to use the stuff again, and it will be going in the accident book, etc.

Thankfully I was able to flush it with water straight away, but the small burn it left was full thickness. Scary.

It’s a good message to get out there for people to be careful but your employer/boss should be doing much better. Pretty sure a good solicitor would be able to rip them a new one over something like this. If that’s not what you want to do then it’s lucky for them (providing you weren’t negligent etc).

Hopefully it doesn’t scar and isn’t sore for too long!

Good luck.

I hope you recover well. Important to remember the hazard warning labels are there for good reason. Powerful cleaning substances have a lot of hazards associated with them.

It should not have been dealt with by washing with water until most has been wiped off because it reacts very exothermically (gets very hot). It is always worth knowing the remedial action ahead of use. https://science.cleapss.org.uk/Resource/SSS022-Sulfuric-VI-acid.pdf See the remedial action at the foot of the document.

That's extremely interesting and very good to know if it ever happens again (I'd like to think it won't).

I guess in the panic I just went for the water, but if it was a bigger burn, the 'wipe off first' tactic would have significant effects on the severity and size of the burns.

Quite understandable reaction which is why it is important to know. Knowing in advance is important because the last thing you are going to do when you get it on you is calmly find and read the guidance. To be honest, there should be clear guidance on the bottle somewhere. I would be curious whether that simply states wash with water.

Ouch! Hope you’re ok and thanks for the warning. We used to use HF at work and that was bad enough.
