Tunisia - anyone been 🇹🇳 04:08 - May 30 with 1625 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

First things first, after my bad news I mentioned a week or two ago, we have spoke. I feel alot better about things. Thanks to everyone in that thread who gave such good advice. It was really comforting but at the time I was still in shock and didn’t know what to say in response. So apologies for not really getting back to everyone. It really did help though and I’m very grateful for all of the responses.

Anyway, as something that has come out of that conversation, I decided I wanted to do something nice for us both and have booked a week away for as early as we could both get off work (July 7th). So we’re off to Tunisia. And I thought I’d ask the good people of TWTD if there’s any specific things I ought to know. It’s all inclusive and it’s 5 stars with various swimming pools, bars, restaurants and water sports. Quite looking forward to trying my hand at wakeboarding and jetskiing. It’s the El Mouradi Palm Marina hotel. I’ve never been to that part of the world but £1500 for a week in the suite with all of that chucked in seemed pretty good value I thought. Anywhere hot with alcohol and not crazy expensive at such late notice being its four weeks away was pretty much all we wanted. But is there anything about the actual area/country I ought to know? Obviously there was the big terrorist attack on that beach 10 years ago but that’s all I really knew about Tunisia as a place before this.

One other question, how easy is it generally to play golf abroad? They’ve a course one mile away with a shuttle service. How much of a hassle is hiring clubs etc? If it’s not too difficult, I quite fancy spending a morning having a round while she drives the buggy.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or advice.

I was there, inadvertently, during the Jasmine Revolution in January 2011. They are, for the most part, very noble people but very exploited. Make sure you tip well, and in cash directly to the people giving good service if you in turn want to feel good about yourself.

I played golf there and it was easy to hire clubs. It is advisable to ensure you have plenty of water with you as it can get very hot. The accessories like tees can be a little unusual ! The course is usually a good test of your golf.

I was there in late 2010, actually stayed about five minutes away from where your hotel is for a few days. Not loads around then, some nice restaurants in El Kantaoui but it's very much a resort. Sousse was a bit rougher, felt very much like a naïve tourist there.

Best thing we did is get out around the country (admittedly on a coach that made Galloways look lively), the amphitheatre at El Jem, salt lake and the edge of the Sahara were all worth seeing.

Oh and make sure you try the harissa over there, can't get anything as good as that over here.

I don't have any Tunisia advice but good luck with everything with the missus... and try not to let too much alcohol and sunshine blur things!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I was there two years before Covid hit - so things could have changed.

I liked it overall, same as every country I've been to, some good areas, some bad areas.

But one thing was tip them for everything, we found even in the hotel the person bringing you coffee to your table at breakfast (it was a buffet breakfast) expected a tip. But they only wanted US$, nothing else.
But as I said, it's poss things have changed.

I went to Tunisia around the year 2000. It was insanely hot every day. We did the Star Wars village and Roman amphitheatre bus trip in a knackered bus with no air conditioning. I don't think I've drank so much water in all my life. Outside of the hotel and resorts, which were all very pleasant, the contrast of wealthy and poor was very evident. Oh, and my friend picked up an ear infection whilst we were staying in a desert town in the Sahara which meant going to a pharmacist in the middle of the night. It looked like a lock up and cost us a small fortune to get the drugs, but they worked.

Watch your UV. The coast has a lovely refreshing breeze which is there to deceive young white English men full of beer into thinking the factor 15 sun cream they applied 6 hours ago is still legit.

I went to Port El Kantoui around 2000, wasn't keen at all, just not a nice atmosphere.

Maybe things have changed, but it's not somewhere I'd ever think of going to again.

But, for that price, with a bit of sun and R&R then I'm sure you'll be fine.

How easy is it generally to play golf abroad? Guess it depends on how easy you find it to play golf in the UK. Frustrating as fook from my experience.

I have been to Tunisia twice, once on a family holiday, once to play golf. I thought it a reasonable place to visit for some cheap sun, although the whole country was very much "second world" at best. As for the golf, I did play at Golf El Kantoui & while the layout was reasonable, the condition of the course was very poor & from recent reviews, it hasn't improved much.Play was very slow as well as there were lots of hackers/beginners playing & the place was shambolically organised. I'm sure you can hire clubs, but they probably won;t be of the best quality but it doesn't seems worth the expense & hassle of taking your own out for just a couple of rounds.

Thanks all. Appreciated as always.

The golf idea isn’t a definite in all honesty but if we’re there anyway and there’s a course, it feels almost like I should for the experience. But with other stuff like kayaking and wakeboarding available, realistically that would take precedent.

Interesting as to the suncream comments. I burn badly as it is. Have actually had my face swell up badly from sun poisoning and that’s from our sun so I imagine there’s has the hallmarks to be blistering. 30 degrees minimum as well.

Tbh I think it’s the best money I’ve spent. Given us something to look forward to out of nowhere.

Living here in Spain I only wear factor 50 on my face and a minimum of F30 on my body. Tunisia in July will be scorching and much closer to the Equator. Wear lots of suncream, I've seen lots of people ruin their holidays by not protecting themselves.
Enjoy!

If you’re that reactive to sun, I’d suggest shopping before you go for some loose cotton shirts with sleeves (kaftan style, not office) and maybe a pair or two of baggy cotton trousers to wear sometimes instead of shorts too. And don’t forget a hat.

And 5 days to a week before you go and while you’re there, start taking a daily anti histamine...it won’t stop you burning but it might ease or prevent the symptoms including prickly heat. Assuming it’s ok for you to take anti histamines of course....Definitely not proven medical advice, just an anecdotal suggestion. Works for my missus
