Shows you how far the right has moved; he’d be labelled a lunatic commie now! Not so fondly remembered, but a lot better than what they have now. Back in a time when politicians were still serious.

Yep just shows how far the batsh*t craziness has gone that GWB of all people is now 'fondly remembered'.

From a political point of view, I wasn't a fan but he always struck me as a decent human being, not something that can be said of Trump or his lackeys in high places.

I see Trump’s odious mate Musk is starting to scramble away from the orange one as quickly as he can now. There’s going to be fun and games there. I gather Trump is jealous of Musk’s wealth and wants some of it.
George W Bush? Awful with his wars based on lies. But light years better than what they have now.

Not only relatively decent, but the contrast of his clarity and openness there with the rambling bullsh!t that comes out of T*ump's gob is a bit of a shock which illustrates how far standards have fallen from what was arguably a low starting point.

People used to think he was a dumbarse back in the day. He seems like Stephen Hawking compared to the current occupant of the Whitehouse.

Those that have met and spent time with Bush tend to say as much, decent guy who genuinely cared. His 'folksy' style and manner of speaking always made him a target particularly for non-Americans but it also endeared him somewhat to his base. Having watched the excellent "9/11: Inside the President's War Room" documentary about the immediate aftermath and response to the attacks, I think he came out better than many would expect.
Of course the first thing you hear at this point is "ah but Iraq/Afghanistan/War on Terror" - I honestly think most presidents after 9/11 would have felt no choice but to lash out somehow. A Clinton certainly. Obama too, he wasn't above dropping bombs on far away places. Gore? Not sure. Maybe it would have been done more purposefully and efficiently than the mess of Iraq under one of those, and without the influence of Rumsfeld/Cheney. But fact is up until Trump at least, US foreign intervention has followed similar patterns and doctrine whomever is in charge.

I always sensed that completing the job in Iraq that Bush Snr started was a great motivation for him.

But Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 Not sure the other presidents you mention would have picked that country to invade
But on the general message of the thread I agree - billion times better than the current moron

It was definitely personal with Saddam. Like you say, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 but a phoney "WMD" threat was used as an excuse to invade. Can understand invading Afghanistan as they were harbouring Osama Bin Laden at the time. But the mission objectives were unclear. Initially it seemed to be to hunt down and dismantle Al Qaeda, then it became a mission to overthrow the Taliban and then required 20 years of occupancy, after which the Taliban instantly seized back control again. Ultimately achieved nothing by invading Afghanistan really and in the end Osama wasnt even found there anyway.

Your second para is so important as a general point.
We're such a tribal species in today's media/social media environment, and I certainly include my tribe, the 'environmentalist-lightweight socialists' in that. We have to get back to focussing on the fixing of specific issues rather than the entrenched personal conflicts or we'll never escape this spiral.
I see bits of good in Bush, Gove even Thatcher (very little of course for me, but some positive environmental actions), and I implore anyone who's instant response is to shout out "What! The Thatcher who privatised the utilities and sold off social housing" to actually think about the point I'm trying to clumsily make.

Much like Chamberlain in the late 1930s, George W Bush was a leader with a primarily domestic agenda who had an international crisis thrust upon him, for which he was not tempramentally or ideologically prepared.

The Iraq war was not Bush's response to 9/11. The invasion of Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban came first and was properly directed at the instigators of the attacks, al-Qaeda, and their protectors.
Iraq was a separate issue, which had been festering for over a decade and included elements such as the persecution of the Marsh Arabs.
