Guess how many small boat crossings were attempted last week (n/t) on 10:33 - Jun 10 by Pinewoodblue | It is the knock on effect that annoys me. The number of hotel bedrooms available in UK is significantly reduced putting up hotel prices, I have recently had to make an unscheduled overnight stop due to car problems. One night, without adding parking costs and food at a Premier inn £130. Lots of rooms at Premier inns midweek are occupied by contractors it is adding to inflationary costs. We all pay more. The real problem is not dealing with asylum seekers in a speedy way. It is taking far too long to resolve each application for asylum and if it is refused there is a long winded appeal process. |
That seems about par for the course for an unplanned on-the-spot booking.

It’d be half a crown if it wasn’t for the ruddy forriners! I looked up how much the government pays hotels to house asylum seekers. It averages out at about £140 per person per night. Nice work if you can get it and I’d be checking to see if the hoteliers benefitting are linked to the Tories (most are on contracts dished out over the last 2-3 yrs). They take up about 4% of our hotel rooms apparently, which is obviously quite a lot. There may be a knock on effect on price, but no idea how large. Average hotel ‘fullness’ rates are in the 70s%, so you could alternatively argue there’s plenty of room. I suppose it all depends on local supply/demand. One thing I do know is that whenever you stay in a hotel mid-week it’s full of business types or contractors. I suspect the works market does a lot more to drive up prices (hence why the hotels charge more during the week).

What do you mean it has aged well? Because more came yesterday doesn't suddenly make the OP incorrect. I presumed the OP's intention was to show that some weeks there are zero crossings, but these don't get reported because it's not really news. The overall point is lots of people think illegal immigration is far worse than it actually is, due to the agenda-driven media.

Surely illegal immigration relates to just those who enter the Country undetected, not those who are picked up in the channel and brought ashore where they apply for asylum. The problem that needs to be tackled is the time it takes to deal with asylum applications. It is unfair to asylum seekers to be kept in limbo for so long.

I've no idea what an HMO is but I'll downarrow you anyway because I'm pretty sure you're wrong.

I might be wrong but I don't think arriving by boat across the channel is a legal method of entry! You're correct with your second point though.

HMO houses of multiple occupancy. Serco have a government contract to provide accommodation for Asylum seekers. They will lease an HMO sometimes on five, or more , years lease. The property owner receives a good return on their investment. Serco maintain the property. They are always on the look out for more property and there are often planning applications to convert a property into an HMO. Guess’s you were right to down vote.

His "Of course it is,😂" comment suggests he thinks illegal immigration is as bad as many think it is, so my downarrow still stands. You only have to look at the facts to see it's actually a tiny problem in comparisson to the column inches it gets. It's a right wing agenda to create a 'bad guy' that can be attacked, to get the gullible behind them and distract from other issues (such as the last 14 years of Tory corruption).

Yep. It’s unfair and unnecessarily expensive to have an inefficient asylum claims process.

Despite applications for asylum reaching record highs the number of cases waiting for an initial hearing is down slightly so more cases are brung decided than a year ago. Unfortunately the number of appeals has risen by 88% , there are now over 50,000 cases awaiting appeal. https://www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/stay-informed/explainers/top-facts-from-the-la
