Are you going to type the first thing that pops in your head without bothering to gain knowledge of the subject everytime or will it just be on this post?

Yet another ongoing battle to get justice on 21:41 - Jun 25 with 513 views | Oldsmoker | I'm sure some Whitehall person with only facts and imperial evidence as his focus would blame the Japanese for getting burnt and poisoned by radiation and not recording how far in meters they were from ground zero. We need proper statistics so lets experiment on army personnel. That's the mind-set of WW1 generals. UK Nuclear bomb testing started in 1952 and ended in 1991 (Wiki). Conscription for the army ended in 1960 and the last conscripts were discharged in 1963. They never signed up for it 'cos they had no choice. 'kin disgraceful.

Tempting to pile on - be overly critical of your comment - I'll just post this.... Is always quite difficult to accept that people or institutions that we trust can behave badly towards people, putting their own reputations ahead of doing what's right. This is definitely one of those times, the MOD treating their own people with disdain both in the original testing and in refusing to be open and transparent to this day about the medical records they continue to withold. So rather than grabbing a straw (to defend or mitigate their actions) - I'll point out your comment in factually inaccurate. I am sure you made it in good faith so won't overly criticise it, it is natural to want to believe the MOD would look out for it's staff and want the best for them including vets. But the ongoing cover up and failure to do all they can to help those affected tells us that the MOD, like many other institutions (The police, the church, the Post office) put their own reputation first. If that is a surprise to anyone - well we all live and learn and some of what we learn is unsettling - so it is natural to deny what is staring us in the face. Whether you choose to watch the link is your call - but I would encourage you to do so - and open your mind to what happened. BL

The vast majority of these guys were conscripts for one. For two, even if they did sign up, they signed up to be soldiers not nuclear test guinea pigs.

I'm probably the only one on here who spent any time on Christmas Island. It was the fag end of my National Service and it was as a part of the closing down operation. I want to correct this idea that it was only soldiers who were there. There were many of us airmen, many sailors, marines and contingents from the Fijian army. There were also many from the nearby Gilbert and Elliss Islands who were there to act as cleaners, etc.. [Post edited 26 Jun 10:32]

Would you be willing to share with the board your experience of National Servic there, and in particular whether anyone you knew was part of the testing, and if that impacted their health? Totally understand if you don't want to, or feel obliged to keep strictly to the demands of the Official Secrets Act, as they were explained to you at the time.

"Totally understand if you don't want to, or feel obliged to keep strictly to the demands of the Official Secrets Act, as they were explained to you at the time." That's a very interesting thing to write. Are you secretly a part of security, seeking out anyone who was there to warn them to keep quiet about what they saw and did there? Quick, where's the parapet? I want to duck behind it! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Haha! No, I'm just somebody who has spoken to many WW2 and subsequent conflict veterans, and I am aware that many of the WW2 and National Service era are very cagey about saying much at all, because of the fear of God being put into them when they signed the OSA. But then Jackson Lamb* would say that, wouldn't he? ;-) * From Slow Horses, substitute in George Smiley if you prefer.
