Questioning the lack of signings...ridiculous 09:58 - Jul 5 with 5639 viewsWestcountryblue

It's incredible reading some of the comments (mostly on social media) about our lack of signings so far.
I think recency bias is influencing people's thoughts about our squad, which, at this level, is incredibly strong—even if we weren’t to make any new signings.

Starting with our likely back four: Johnson – O’Shea – Greaves – Davis. I genuinely think there’s a strong argument for each of those players being the best in their position at this level. On top of that, we have real quality in reserve, with Woolfenden, Townsend, and Clarke, all of whom have operated at the top end of this division over the past couple of years. Premiership starters, no, but exceptional squad players at this level.

The same recency bias applies to Muric and Palmer. Yes, they’ve had some high-profile mistakes playing in the best division in the world, but both had previously been part of Championship-elect teams.

Our midfield is absolutely stacked with quality. If you had told any Town fan 16–17 months ago that we’d have the option of Hutchinson, Philogene, Szmodics, J. Clarke, and Ogbene—in addition to the likes of Chaplin and Broadhead—I don’t think many would have believed you. It’s easy to forget that many of these players are capable of hitting or exceeding the 15-goal mark in a season and have a history of doing so! Morsy and Taylor come off three seasons having played together and with Premier League experience. Humphreys might be perfectly fine as a fourth-choice backup.

Up front, Hirst will be one of the best at this level, and El Hamadi is a serviceable backup at this point—even before we’ve made any additions.

Teams like Birmingham have brought in some washed-up, relatively low-cost talent from the Middle East and Turkey so far, credit to them as a promoted club. But honestly, I think we’re shopping in a completely different market.

Hopefully, we’ll see three quality permanent additions come in—players of the level of Downes, Cajuste, or Guiu—and maybe, as we've done before, a couple of top-quality loanees in the mould of Hutchinson circa 2023, with Premier League clubs likely to view Ipswich and McKenna as the perfect place to send top talent. Ashton and McKenna will be shopping with the Premiership in mind, not bringing in 30 year old + players like Wrexham are, seduced by the Hollywood owners and chance of a last paycheck.

You were moaning the other week that we spent too long trying to sign someone from Greece. Can't even keep your negative trolling consistent.

To be fair, I'm sure it came up at one of the fan forums and it was stated that KMc prefers players who are fluent in English because of the large amounts of info he submits to players. Cajuste shows we are willing to look abroad but he speaks better English than most of us.

Because it shows your argument as being all over the place as you seem to just want to derail threads by spamming negative gibberish.

Even you can see that second line is more than a bit dim and desperate.

And you must be one of the happy clappers who clapped Chambo after the 1-1 draw with Brum that sent us down.

Accepting mediocrity doesn't pay

Even more desperate.

@JJJJ
Without doubt the Striker/Centre Forward & Central Midfield positions are the ones that urgently need attention, but I wonder is it true to say that behind the striker is fine?
We have great options in there of course & I really hope that we hold on to Hutchinson, Clarke & Philogene, to play there as well as Szmodics, Chaplin & even Broadhead. Then we have Ogbene & Burns to come back in that right sided, defensive responsibilities role too.
Those options will be frightening for opponents in the Championship this season, and should be more than enough for an automatic promotion challenging side, but ... Ipswich are trying to sign players now with a view to them playing in the PL in 13 months time.
For that reason, I think McKenna & Ashton will be looking for a player or two now, with a greater physical & technical profile than we currently have. Enciso had the ability to win & retain possession despite strong challenges from PL defenders, which was something that our more lightweight permanent signings struggled with a lot. He was a loan player though & played as an individual most of the time, so if we can bring a player or two with his physical strength in now, & get them integrated into the spirit of our team during the season, we would be in a much better position to take on the PL should we go back up.

Cheers for the response.

Just feel like we have a lot of choice there at this level, especially if Hutchinson isn’t sold (although I think that’s a real possibility by September 1st). Ogbene has a bit more about him physically and is coming back. Of course, wouldn’t be against upgrading any area of the field with a mind to the future if the right player is there. The CM area and a second legit striker is of paramount importance though.

Love Hirst but need more over a 46 game season and would be disappointed if we start the season with Ali as the back up as a parachute club in a good financial position.

For sure need 2 CMs, including at least one starter.

Ali won't be the back-up to Hirst. That's a given.

We're showing real interest in Canadian international Tani Oluwaseyi.

Feels a real punt, but we are certainly looking hard at MLS this off season

We all know we need probably 3 players but it is still earlyish in the window. Yes ideally you'd like the players in before pre-season starts but things don't always work out that way.

Should we sign players who are low down on our list of targets now because others will if not? Should we overpay for players to get them through now?

I think Ashton and the others involved with transfers have done enough to have earned our trust over the past few years to know they'll do the best thing for the club.

Blame it on the summer heat. We're jam-packed in many areas and barely bare-bones in another, which opens the door for our worriers to worry.

If the window closed today we'd be in big trouble obviously as the numbers aren't there right now, in CM especially but also CB / ST cover. However, in most positions we already have our starters in place (providing we keep hold of people), and in many we have their substitutes, and in some we even have the substitute's substitutes. It probably allows us to be more focused and particular about who we bring in, though I admit I'll feel more relaxed once the first new CM arrives.

Couldn't agree with this more (apart from Birmingha, - I think they've made 2 or 3 pretty great signings). The sudden entitlement and panic from sections of our fanbase is frankly bizarre.

Our squad today has literally no bearing on how we go this season. If 2 more weeks or so go by and we've not brought anyone in then yeah we really are losing out on time on the training ground... but right now we should be looking forward to watching what is amazing talent we've amassed for this level. Never mind the fact that we could make 2 phenomenal signings this week and then we'll suddenly be the greatest thing since sliced bread again.

Depends what you thought of last off season and January overall I guess. Still a little frustrated we aren’t going to the continent more to widen the net so to speak but maybe they’ll prove me wrong.

Fluent is stretching it beyond what has been stated I think. Even the leaked dossier talked about "understand English or have worked with an English speaking coach" which is quite a way off fluent. Encisco's spoken English was quite poor but he could understand enough. I think it was also a preference rather than an absolute.
