England Women’s Euro Thread 18:05 - Jul 5 with 5817 viewsSwailsey

Would be cool to get a thread going for those interested/watching today and for the rest of the tournament.

What are people’s thoughts? France are definitely weakened without Renard, surprising that.

I really fancy us to get a result tonight and have super high hopes for the tournament.

One of those grey areas... she was in an offside position when the initial cross was played so that will be the argument for offside. But on the other hand, the defender made a deliberate play of the ball, so she shouldn't be adjusted offside from that. But you could also argue the defender only plays it because the attacker is behind her. Tricky.
[Post edited 9 Jul 18:17]

You really never see that given. She is well on when the ball is next played by an opponent. New phase.

Awful. Though not as bad as against France, where I have still not seen anyone explain why offside was given when the (highly questionable) digital picture shows no part of the England player ahead of the French player's hip.

Is it though? England really haven’t had to do that much against this lot. The commentators mentioned they had world class players, I’ve not seen one wearing an orange shirt on this showing. They look a shambles.

I think so. We haven’t allowed them any space at all.

I’m not taking anything away from the Lionesses they have played well, however I’ve been really disappointed with the Dutch. I thought this was going to be a proper game against two forces in women’s football. The Dutch have looked way off the mark, really lacking the basics.

I see England are top of the table now, so it seems they are using goal difference rather than head-to-head results in the tables, which is how it should be.

Really good result. Played well throughout. Could have been a much bigger result too. Dutch were surprisingly poor. Next up is the taffs.

I believe it’s head to head if it’s just the 2 tied on points but goal difference if more.
I’m not 100% on that though.

I am not sure I fully understand. France beat us but we have a better goal difference, and the table shows us ahead of them.

There’s 3 on the same points right now therefore it currently goes to goal difference .. if it was just the two it would be head to head.

Thanks. That seems an odd and confusing way to do it. Football is best when kept simple in my opinion.

I don’t disagree.. it would use be nice to have a little uniformity among the rules across the competitions….but it’s the same frustration in other sports to.

It's mainly just a tournament thing and an easy solution to who should go through if points are level. LaLiga use it and I'm ok with it. Thankfully England's qualification is now back in their hands. They were excellent this evening and probably could have scored more.

Firstly, it’s wild to me that 2 people have downvoted the original post on this - people are mental.

Secondly, big game this evening!

England played the Netherlands tonight like France played them the other night, lovely well drilled & intelligent stuff, cracking goals.

I think your downvotes were probably for your incorrect prediction from a couple of people with perfect 20:20 hindsight!

Goal difference is easy too and has been used in football all my life until relatively recently. The authorities constantly tinker with things.

Decent game this between Switzerland and Iceland. Loads of woodworks.

Loads of Dottirs.

I feel sorry for Miedema. She was world class in her early to mid 20s but since then she has a lot of bad injuries and is past her best now a week before turning 29.

Spain very good again, definitely the team to beat. It annoyed me that so many players had their first names on the back of their shirts though. 😄

Yeah, if we want to win it, we’ll definitely have to beat them. Excited for Sunday!

England just need to play the ball about the park. What Wales lack in quality they make up for in effort. Run them around girls. Tire them out.
