Important note about protests and protesters 10:43 - Jul 6 with 877 views | redrickstuhaart | You cannot "protest" a thing. You can protest about it, or against it. Or even over it. But you can't just protest it. That is grammatically silly and a nasty Americanism which we ought to protest against. See also "shop the range" or "shop our store"
Important note about protests and protesters on 10:48 - Jul 6 with 835 views | itfcserbia | For example, in Serbia we protest against Vucic's repressive regime and hijacking of all three legislative, executive and judicial power in the country by a nationalist madman.

Important note about protests and protesters on 11:05 - Jul 6 with 791 views | Guthrum | Not strictly true. It's archaic rather than American, one can protest an opinion, to express it forcefully, as in "Methinks he doth protest too much". Tho you're right within that context, it is being used mainly as lazy shorthand for "to stage/participate in a protest".

Important note about protests and protesters on 11:18 - Jul 6 with 756 views | bsw72 | That’s not true, you can protest a law or protest against a law, both are correct. The first is merely more direct and is transitive verb usage while the latter is phrasal verb usage and considered more expressive. Both however are grammatically correct.

Its an ugly, lazy, clumsy americanism. We must resist.

That’s a timely reminder that although things aren’t great in the UK, they could be a lot worse

* "The lady doth protest too much, methinks" - Lady Gertrude, I think? Can I add the similar "it needs ****ed" - what the f happened to the "to be", eh? That needs kicked into the long grass, pronto.

The quote you are using is about the action of protest so it works. Its not specific to a thing- ie "he doth protest against noise pollution, too much". The equivalent would be "methinks he does protest noise pollution" which is the clumsy awkward thing Im complaining about. I have just been asked by a website to "shop our sale". Grrrr. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It irritates me. Ergo it matters. My daughter is currently learning not to say "vinyls" when she means records!

Hate to say it but while the word vinyl is a mass noun, it is now accepted and recorded in the EOD that vinyls is a plural. You are Victorian Dad from Viz and I claim my 5 shillings.

Accepted or not, its nonsense. Vinyl records are an anachronism in many ways, and the use of that word comes from a misunderstanding of how it was used back when they were actually the main source of recorded music. They may as well just scratch nails down a chalkboard 3 inches form my ear whilst whistling an inane tune. The world should be how I want it. Im just not having it and thats all there is to it :-)

There was also that German band that did the song about the music charts and their excitement when watching Top of the Pops - The Vinyl Countdown, duh-duh-durr, duh-duh-duh-duh-durr...

Don't get me started on the pronunciation of "privacy" which I keep correcting by shouting the correct pronunciation every time I hear a current advert. [Post edited 6 Jul 13:49]
