Realising we were/are a year ahead of schedule 09:30 - Jul 12 with 2076 viewspointofblue

A bit obvious saying this, and I'm sure many on here have realised this already because they're far smarter and savvier than me, but the potential new signings and final upgrade of the academy to category one status really suggests that we were aiming for Premier League football for 2025/26. The plan being a season of second tier consolidation for 23/24, whilst getting the club in a position off the pitch for the Premier League in terms of the academy, scouting network and stadium , and the pushing for promotion in 24/25.

Promotion itself came too early but perhaps financially it's offered a welcome boost to get projects over the line. Hopefully it'll result in us going up this season and making a real fight of survival, at the very least in 26/27.

Ive always said that our recruitment last last year pretty much proved this... we obviously didnt have a Premier League wated list so pretty much stuck with the top Championship players list..... the increased income just meant we got much further down the list than we could really expect..... guess yhats given us the opportunity to be picky now and take our time?

Good post.

We had far too much to do on and off the pitch last years in order to give the Premiership a good go. You'd like to think that recruitment we've done over the last 12 months, as well as what we'll do this window, will set us up with less work to do, should we gain promotion again this season. A ton of stuff has been done off the pitch - stadium improvements, Cat 1 etc

Yup. I can't remember if I said this before, but I see last season as a bit like (stretched analogy alert) going unofficially to look at a house you might want to view. Drive by, pop your head over the wall, check out the neighbourhood etc, then come back a little later with the estate agent and a clearer idea of what will need attention when you go to what will hopefully be your forever home.

Preferably never having to meet that dreadful inbred family people up the road.

I like the way you are thinking. It might be having been made to talk to that inbred neighbors twice in one season what made us want to get the hell out of there neighborhood for a rest. Lol

This post sums up why I was so pragmatic about last season. We've come down in a much better place, that's before even considering this transfer window.

The only trouble with all this sort of talk is you don’t get to pick and choose when you do well. It could be another 20 years before we get promoted again. It probably won’t be of course and we’ll give it a good go, but nothing’s guaranteed. There are a number of other clubs who’ll also think they can win promotion this year.

Yep.

Staying up is proving difficult enough for teams who should be prepared for it, so I guess in hindsight we didn't really stand a chance when we had barely got ourselves out of League 1.

Relegation was obviously disappointing and especially the way the second half of the season went, but I've always maintained that all the signs suggest we're going in the right direction overall.

In this modern game it’s likely you are never really ready because if you fall you lose some player and if you rise you add some players that might not settle from day 1. However what it does do is allow accelerated investment at a level impossible under normal investment levels for those without safety of parachute payments. The critical thing is how you maximise that acceleration investment in order to stay ahead of the pack in the champ.

Let’s do this Ipswich.

Appreciate your considered thoughts.

We wouldn't have been able to do one thirtieth of the player recruitment we've seen without promotion, so I disagree honestly in respect to the timing of it. I believe we needed to go up in order to implement most of what we've done, and 24/25 in the Championship would likely have seen us only match the 23/24 investment at best, due to FFP restrictions.

We weren't ready from a recruitment standpoint to fully seize the moment, no doubt, but the opportunity to realise promotion in any given season is so slim for non-parachute clubs that's it's a very special achievement to just enter that parachute group, and only from there may you truly catapult yourself forwards, even if while stomaching a PL relegation. We only need to reflect on Leeds & Burnley's scorecards last season to know it would have been a frightening underdog challenge again.

Birmingham and Wrexham may be outliers in their chances this season, or future seasons, because they've seemingly found revenue streams that aren't attainable for normal Championship clubs. Wrexham's situation is truly unique, while Brum's boast that they'll be breaking revenue records this year may be founded on less creative, Man City-esque techniques.

I like what you are saying.

But would you put your mortgage on town going up this season?

(If you have a mortgage of course).

It is agreeable this sentiment. And McKenna tried some different things and probably made a mistake or too for tactics as well. The only other aspect being the Nottingham Forest buy a complete new squad method, but we were quite close to that as well.
