“Taking a punt” 09:22 - Jul 20 with 1108 viewsBlueNomad

We have left behind the days of “punts”, or in other words taking a chance. Our transfer business is far more scientific and thought out than that and squad places are valuable. Isn’t it time to stop using that expression?

Oh I don't know, there is still a chance now that we are recruiting more from overseas that a new player unversed in English ways will be caught for not paying Scudamore's in Mill Lane, Cambridge...

Poll: What was in Wes Burns' imaginary cup of tea ?

Sometimes we still do it a bit with regards from and fitness e.g. Tuanzebe (worked) or Phillips (didn't work).

But I know what you mean. Makes for a good question. Who were the last players we took a 'punt' on?

Lets rule out that mad window when gamechanger took over.

Al-Hamadi for me was a bit of a punt and IMO worked in that he contributed to us getting over the line to the prem.

Poll: Who do we think McKenna (not you) will partner Greaves with ?

Ben Godfrey maybe? Only a loan of course, but he did take up a place in the squad. Hadn't been doing much at Atalanta, so it looked a bit of a long-shot that he'd do the business.

Kalvin Phillips was a high-profile, expensive punt. It was a gamble which didn't work. Dont think there was any scientific approach going into his signing.

As others have said - Godfrey, Phillips, AAH and Tuanzebe all punts of sorts. Brandon Williams another that was a big one and didn’t work out. Before that, arguably Luongo was one too given he’d barely played for a year and Gassan Ahadme seemingly signed based off a handful of performances including one against us

I still don’t understand why some to think all of our signings fit some kind of fixed profile when the reality is that we sign a variety of players for a variety of reasons, have done for some time and will no doubt continue to do so

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

Yes we are way ahead of a punt. Retire the term!

And

There isn’t the space in the squad to take a punt is there? It’s not like there are many finisher or squad gaps to fill. Who would we punt to take a punt? Baggott? Humphries? AAH? Surely not a Broadhead or even Taylor

Wasn’t there an interview with him on this site not that long ago? Think he spoke quite candidly about his gambling addiction. I’m not at saying that he’s a nice bloke, but whilst here, his addiction did underpin almost everything about him.
