Ashley Young - reported wage 17:32 - Jul 23 with 3324 viewsLitfc00

Reliable Watford source - @Louorns on X says that Town are offering a total package of 50k a week.
Young turned down 40k a week at Everton, and around 20k a week and captaincy at Watford.

If true that says to me he’s playing more than the role of back up.

That's nonsense.

It's true that Watford could only go to £20k and we essentially gazumped them with a base salary in the region of late £20k's with bonuses taking it over £30k.

He turned down 40k at Everton because he wanted to move back down south. Playing at the same club as his son is seen as a big pull too.

Interesting that Everton still wanted to register him as a player for next season.

He wasn't offered a new deal at Everton was he?

They were interested in keeping him. But he didn't want to stay up north.

Do you think he signed for because he wants to play for us or to be close to his boy.
Any father on here will tell you.
For him money will be irrelevent. I expect it to be low.

Wonder if his son thinks the same. At his son's age I was doing everything possible to get away from my parents!!

What you've posted there doesn't mention 50k. That would be crazy money. Having said that, we're not paying a fee for him. A loan fee for a decent loanee would be justified for a 12 month period. We know that we're not signing him for the longer term, and we know that there's no way we're making any profit on him. So it's just a question of what this one season is worth. I would view part of his salary as being in lieu of a fee.

But no way is it 50k/week, and I haven't seen any evidence that it is. 25% higher than his current Premier League employers? I mean it just has a total unreality to it.

Ashley Young set to sign... by Chris_ITFC 21 Jul 12:45
So we’d pay him more than Watford would for him to be their captain?

If it's true we are paying him a substantial salary surely we'd have been better spending it on keeping Axel

We may as well have given Morsey another decent new contract and he isn’t as old !

I don’t think it was even that. It was more that his partner didn’t settle down here so he wanted to go back north with her.

Given he played 36 times for Everton last season - then, yes, I would expect him to want to play!

Even if it is 50K a week prorata that is still better value than Muric over the length of his contract. No brainer

We don’t know that yet do we. He could be the stand out keeper in the league this year.

(I’m probably clutching at straws)

Players take care of themselves so much better nowadays. It's not unusual these days to see older players competing at a good level.
