A salmon-esque leap from Patri.

The Brits are really the only ones who want to stop simulation or diving.
Many South Americans see it as a skill to be commended - the ability to trick a ref is just as good as being able to trick an opponent...

Going back to the OP the Spanish were throwing themselves on the floor a lot, they didn't need to tackle our players, they could do this and the ref would give them a free kick. The worst decision I thought when Agyemang tried to run though was intentionally blocked off by a defender and the ref gave them the free kick....

You must watch football with red, white and blue blinkers. If there was a world cup of sh1thousery we would be among the favourites.

There were maybe 2 dives from Spanish players in 120 minutes and a couple of times the ref got things wrong.

From being in the North Stand for a couple of decades or so. Diving etc is fine when it benefits Ipswich, but when it doesn’t, that’s when people have an issue with it.

Leeds away, around 1990 we were 2 up and Kiwomya dived so poorly we laughed. Ref gave a pen and we cheered.

Was genuinely embarrassing but it was given.

Spoke to him 30 years later too. Didn't deny it.

Did we score the penalty and what was the final score?

I’m pretty sure that kiwomya dived away at Sheff Wednesday - can’t remember the score but he definitely went over very easily.

Was that 4-2? We went 3-0 up, Leeds got a couple back and I think Milton got the fourth?

One of the rare occasions when both Kiwomya and Dalian Atkinson played up front. Tore them apart.

Tarrico was a hero for his gamesmanship, and Mariner, Butcher, and Osman were no shrinking violets. Throw in '6 foot 2, eyes of blue' and we do love a battler! Chopper Jefferson anyone!

Yep. Mervyn Day in goal for dirty Leeds if my memory serves.

Leeds United v Ipswich Town, 11 March 1989 - 11v11 match report https://www.11v11.com/matches/leeds-united-v-ipswich-town-11-march-1989-123494/

My timing wasn't far out. Less than 20k there.

Would've been my first visit to Leeds, do remember a quite intimidating walk back to the station with plenty of locals looking for an opportunity to have a pop.

Reckon we'd have had less than 500 there, maybe that should be the priority for future Bromleyesque games. No excuses like "I wasn't born" accepted either.

Whereas football has gone too far in allowing players to roll on the floor without sanction. I’d rather that than allow football to go back to the 70s and 80s which was allowed thugs to injure skilful players for fun.

It wasn’t like that. They didn’t play hard just for the fun of it. It was part of the game and if you committed 100% to tackles etc, you actually would be ok. There weren’t that many victims of assault back 8n the day. Over the top leg breakers, knee high specials did happen, but they were the exception not least because the perpetrator would get his in due course.

It’s now fast becoming a non contact sport which I don’t think does the game any favours. Players rolling around screaming (serious injuries - players don’t make much movement or noise - breathing is about all you can do) and you can usually tell when some show pony is hamming it up. But the refs swallow it and the pundits give that knowing chuckle and justify it.

The top skilful players rarely got caught by the animals and most of them knew how to look after themselves so players didn’t always dish the worst out to them. For example: Paul Mariner enacted serious modifications on the Cologne Centre Half who he reckoned had wronged him in the first leg. He didn’t look it but knew how to deliver the knee, boot and elbow if needed. Complete player.

Whymark was different (as was David Johnson 1st). He just got up, got on with it and often scored by way of revenge. RIP the three of them.

It’s all about balance. Of course the leg breaker stuff had to go, but for all tackling to go is a shame.

You don't even have to go back that far if you recall the tackle that put paid to Ulrich Le Pen's chances of a career in English football.

Well over 20 years ago now. When he trotted on he looked so weedy my dad said ‘he won’t last five minutes’. I think he lasted less than that. Awful signing.

Then of course there was Matthew Bates clearing Norwich’s Luke Chadwick into the advertising hoardings. Proper tackle, that, and I enjoyed every second of it.

I didn’t enjoy Luke Hyam’s leg breaker on Brentford’s Judge. That was not good. How he wasn’t red carded I’ll never know and why McCarthy left him on the pitch is also a complete mystery.

French ref clearly in the Spanish camp in my view. Giving us absolutely nothing the whole game.

Like you, I was a student at the time and it was also my first time to Elland Road. I went with a couple of Leeds supporting mates plus a couple of others who came along to take the piss for the expected thrashing for Ipswich. I went in the away end, whilst they all slotted in with the animals in the opposite stand. They reckon they could see me going ballistic after every goal. After the game, the Leeds supporters wanted to know who were the pair of 100m sprinters we had up front! Unfortunately, it was at the end of that season we sold Dalian.
