scoring a Jack Clarke goal. Ah, bliss.

Poll: So, how many league wins did you see in person?

Need to see more of that.

How do we fit Clarke, Philogene, Szmodics & Hutchinson into this team? Not to mention Chaplin, Ogbene & Burns. We obviously need depth and no doubt they'll all play plenty, but that might be McKenna's biggest task this season. The rest of the side is looking like its going to pick itself for the most part.

Philogene - Omari - Clarke

I imagine that'll be the starting 3 behind Hirst.

Then Szmodics and Ogbene to intersperse for the final 30.

Right to left: Omari - Szmodics - Philogene / Clarke I reckon.

Philly and JC look more natural off the left, and Omari seems favoured wide. Would hopefully mean Szmodics can effectively play off Hirst as the advanced 10 and bag a hat full. That leaves Ogbene, Chaplin and the other of Philogene / Clarke as replacements which feels like good balance but doesn't solve getting them both on the pitch together. No doubt its a fluid bunch of options though.

Post Jan 2024 - Omari, Broadhead, Chaplin, Burns, Jackson, Sarmiento, Harness - 7 players

Now - Omari, Chaplin, Clarke, Philogene, Burns, Ogbene, Szmodics - 7 players

An enormous upgrade in quality but not in bodies. We know McKenna is going to use 6 every game in those 3 positions. Burns is out for the foreseeable too.

McKenna has always tried to swap the front 4 each game if he can.
If Broadhead goes it would look like Clarke and Philogene sharing the left (the Davis positional differences v Aberdeen works well for both of them.)
Szmodics and Chaplin behind Hirst, Ogbene and Hutch right.
McKenna also usually gives Hutch most of the game, so when Burns comes back it all gets a bit oversubscribed. Think he also sees him eventually in the more central role.
Wonder if Clarke starting right was a look to see if could cover if Hutch moved on and before Burns comes back.
Hopefully some good cup runs as we’ll have the squad for it and unfortunately there are always injuries.

Tend to agree.

Omari obviously has to start, but I think Szmodics will start regularly too. His level of goal threat elevates him.

Then Clarke and Philogene are in a scrap for LW.

Ogbene brings variety on the right, particularly for tougher fixtures. Burns has a fight on.

All very harsh on Chaplin, who I thought linked things up really nicely last night.

Harsh on Chaplin, we know how dangerous he can be at Championship level but I'm sure he'll get his chances. Always going to have rotation and injuries etc in a gruelling schedule and we know McKenna generally likes to change at least 3 of the front 4 in games.

Burns is an interesting one. Long term injured and in the last year of his contract. I think the extent to which we see him again in league action might depend a lot on how Ogbene goes over the next 3 or 4 months.

Jaden, Szmodics and Omari are all superb off the ball as well. Match that with Hirst who we know runs all day. We will be a hard team to play through.

If Szmodics is fit, then surely he has to start? He got a shedload of goals for a very average Blackburn side.

Hirst/New ST

Philogene ---- Szmodics ---- Hutch (my starting choice)

Clarke ---- Chappers ---- Ogbenne

Good depth with the subs and can interchange as and when required from a tactical standpoint.

I’d rank Clarke ahead of Philogene off the ball. He just looks a little more intelligent and persistent about it. Philogene can nick the ball, but can also get completely bypassed in trying.

Both great energy though, I’m splitting hairs.

Yep, said it myself. Such a good player at this level, but the competition is ridiculous. You could argue Omari is our best R10, ahead of both Szmodics and Chaplin.

But if we get Hirst and Szmodics to 20 goals (ambitious, but plausible), we go up.

It is tough. I like both of them.

I'm fairly sure Jaden will get that shirt on the left, Mckenna clearly loves him. But whether its him or Clarke no complaints from me. 2 elite championship players.

Clarke is a good player, just hasn’t quite blossomed yet for us.

It will happen.
