Great to see people aren’t writing players off on 23:37 - Aug 8 by SE1blue | I like Clarke. I also think he had a very good pre-season and deserved to start. Tonight, he was poor though. Some of his passing was awful and he didn't chase people down like he did in those pre-season games. These are things you should be getting right wherever you play on the pitch. Again, people are questioning his ability and place in our the team, not writing him off. |
You could argue a lot of our players were poor, not just Clarke.

Great to see people aren’t writing players off on 23:47 - Aug 8 by TractorWood | I wrote him off after about 6 games in the Prem. Been the right call every game since bar Coventry. Tell me I'm wrong. |
You are wrong You gave him games in a team with no midfield! Well done. Very generous I suppose, given Muric and Philogene only got one game. Still we now know he’s back at the top of the haters list, assuming AAH and JD don’t play. The good thing is that if you go to games and are anywhere near the front, he might be able to hear your and others abuse. Last night we played a team that was cohesive and on a high. They played at home, in the evening, first game back in that god awful part of Birmingham. They’ve invested heavily in players and are a real team well and truly up for it.. We deserved to lose, but we didn’t. We are not a team, just a bunch of individuals at that moment some of whom are looking to move on and the rest are devoid of confidence. I’m sure yours and others relentless abuse of some of the players will really help that confidence which is competitively not there. The time to question is not now. There will be signs after six games and after the transfer window is over. Players will settle down or otherwise and hopefully so will the team. It’s people’s right to criticise - free country and all that and a forum is about views, but that doesn’t stop me loathing the misplaced sense of entitlement that has emerged in the last year and that clearly isn’t going away. As for Clarke, perhaps with a little more encouragement and a little less abuse, he might find his form. He was one of the best players in the Championship two seasons ago because he happens to be a good player. And if the new way is to abuse a player a week, at least be consistent. In contribution terms it is not saying much but Clarke offered more than than Cajuste last season (one meaningless consolation goal one assist from midfield) yet the latter seems beyond criticism and petals were thrown at his feet for his return. No Philogene treatment for him for not signing sooner and keeping his options open. Last night was a horrible fixture. We grabbed a point. It was a very important point - more so than the point we stole at St Andrews the season before last. Why? Because not losing the first game means you are into the season; something on the board. The next few fixtures are about how we play and hopefully settling into a team. Just my view. No doubt a minority one in the now endless, tedious stream of noisy negativity and criticism from some.

Expectations are different. The operating and financial model is different. We've bought players at great upfront and ongoing expense and they are here to deliver. I'm not and would never slate a Burns bought from Fleetwood for £50k or Chaplin for £700k from Barnsley. But Clarke and Philogene are a combined £36m and widely touted talents. They SHOULD be utterly ludicrous at this level. It's not entitlement. I would never think we are entitled to anything. Its broad internal and external expectation and that's something we've never had (in the last 20 years) going into a championship season.

Sure - but Clarke has played 79 minutes for us at this level. Yet you’ve already decided he needs moving on. Even though he could be utterly ludicrous for us.

No he should be utterly ludicrous for us given the outlay. However, he actually just played exactly the same and was equally ineffective and lost as he has been in the past 2 dozen appearances for us.
