Matusiwa will be great 23:55 - Aug 8 with 1410 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Surprised to read a few a bit worried about him after tonight and saw EADT rated him as our worst player along with Clarke! He did get caught a few times but it was his debut, he had Taylor alongside him likely his hardest game of the season in terms of intensity and what he was facing. Thought he showed plenty of good things as well, strong in the tackle and breaking up play. We won’t face many teams like Birmingham out of possession or an atmosphere like that all season. Even second half he was releasing it quicker. Ending the game with Cam, Ali and Jack Taylor on the pitch does concern me but hopefully won’t have to happen again. Jack Clarke on the other hand really disappointing and I thought Davis was poor. Horrible game really glad it’s out the way without a defeat.

A couple of times I was frustrated with him, but then he'd show his quality with a quick accurate pass through the lines to get us moving, something we've been lacking last season for multiple reasons. I think they may be a tiny bit less combative but a lot more creative this year through the central two.

Second half better, perhaps because he’d had a breather to comprehend the pace and intensity of the first half. He did gesture to O’Shea at one point to speak up more, I’d imagine to help with the press Brum had in middle of park. Cajuste and him I can’t wait to see though. Still hope there is a chance of Hackney too.

Matusiwa will be great on 07:29 - Aug 9 with 872 views | fallyblue | I actually thought one of the best bits last night was the foul he made for his booking brought the player down a long way from goal before they got in a dangerous position. We didn’t do enough of that last season we need to be more ruthless in midfield
Matusiwa will be great on 07:54 - Aug 9 with 734 views | megnuts | I thought he was probably our best player in that first 20-25 mins when we were under the cosh a little. His positioning was great, few good blocks, one good tackle. Good passing. Then after he got caught out with the ball for the booking he kind of faded away, which I don’t blame him for. Was walking a tightrope and wouldn’t have taken much to be shown a second I don’t think. Was a real baptism by fire for the championship and he would have learnt a lot. Will benefit him in the long run.
Matusiwa will be great on 08:16 - Aug 9 with 603 views | tonybied | I took was very surprised when I checked on here at HT to see so many roasting him. I'm not saying he had a good game, but there was plenty of positives to take away from his performance. I liked some of what I watched, and I think he'll grow into this team nicely. McKenna clearly wants plenty more quality through the door, and I'm sure that will happen before the end of the window. I expect those players won't be near the pitch by then. Jack Clarke doesn't seem to fit our system, I don't really get why McKenna seems hell bent on fitting him into a role that clearly doesn't suit him. I was excited by his signing, and I don't really like saying this, but I'm starting to think it's just not going to work for him here, and we might be better to cash in on him whilst his stock is still fairly high. Last night's result is what is required right now, being clinical and taking our chances when they come, especially away from home. I wasn't sure how I'd feel after the excitement and alcohol wore off but I'm still mostly pleased with that result. If we can back that up with a win at home against Southampton, when hopefully, we'll have some more bodies available, I'll be more than happy with our start.
Matusiwa will be great on 08:22 - Aug 9 with 536 views | _clive_baker_ | He was much better out of possession than in, but I thought he looked off the pace on the ball. Needed a second too long on a number of occasions and didn’t look especially comfortable on the ball in tight areas. I think it’ll come though, as you say it’s a tough debut and there will be better days ahead for him. Can’t help feel McKenna’s been a little bit failed with the recruitment thus far, he’s clearly frustrated and there’s echos of last summer. Appreciate it’s not easy to get business done early, especially the players were targeting, but we’re behind the 8 ball as it stands. No huge cause for concern though, we’ve got away with a decent point. I thought Leif did well in the circumstances, Clarke made his life a bit tougher than it needed to be at times.

But that was entirely his fault in the first place as he was sloppy and slow to let the player get the ball off him when we were in a good position

Taking that performance in isolation he was poor, so I think people are right to express concern given that he’s been our marquee signing to date. I’m sure he will improve, but imho the EADT assessment was spot on. You won’t get the best out of Clarke (or any of the other attacking midfielders for that matter) if the double pivot isn’t working imho

Matusiwa will be great on 09:58 - Aug 9 with 244 views | darkhorse28 | You’re probably right. Enough quality to suggest (eventually) he’ll do very well. But I’m surprised you’re surprised. He was very poor on the one game. And mitigations aside. Which you’re right about, he will adjust and it’s his first game, that wasn’t a one off. That’s the championship. Every game has that intensity, maybe not off the pitch, with the situation, but in it, it’s a fast, physical, intense league. So he will need to adjust, quickly, because that’s the level of what to expect most weeks…, Birmingham won’t be going up either, lacked quality, there will be better sides in this division, and tougher tests. Shouldn’t be slaughtered, lots to be positive about from him, there’s a player there. But he was poor, it won’t get easier, he needs to improve a lot, and I’m sure he will. Taylor I thot was his usual committed self, great energy…, he just isn’t a CDM and that isn’t his fault…, there’s an elephant in the room. We don’t have any natural CDMS and the one we do have will clearly need patience. That’s a strategic, recruitment and planning issue because we spent enough money over the last 18 months. That’s not a new Dutch signing, Jack Taylor or Cameron Humphrey’s issue…, it’s off the pitch 100% And Jens isn’t at his best in the double pivot either, and wants to be an 8…., he’s in for a shock if he thinks he’s getting the time in the ball he had last season. He ability on the ball will help a lot, but someone is going to have to come and get the ball and be able to hold players off while doing it…, like Sam. We don’t have that player in the squad .., that’s going to be a huge problem.
