I know he wasn't the greatest at commanding his area. But there aren't many keepers with a cooler head and better feet. In our promotion season, a huge part of that was down to Vac, so that when we were under pressure we could play back to him and he'd control a backpass brilliantly, sidestep the attacker, and make a great pass to start our next attack.
The knock on effects for the Muric transfer have not been good. Vaz was pretty poor shot stopper, a hybird of him and Palmer would be ideal.
Can’t believe anyone would clamor back for Muric though he made shocking basic errors.
Statistics only tell a part of the story don't they? I'm no statto, but I don't think stats measure the difficulty of receiving the back pass, and the quality of the ball forward to the midfield, which are very subjective and where Vaz would rate incredibly highly.

Fantastic with the ball at his feet but below average at shot stopping and claiming crosses. Had plenty of errors in him too.
We were right to try and upgrade on him, even if that hasn’t gone fantastically
I mean, it’s failed in every possible way. Palmer is an improvement on Muric, but neither have performed better than Hladky. Still a baffling decision to not offer him the longer deal.

Incredible hard act to follow for any keeper coming here, probably the best feet in football as far as keepers go, couldn't help but think about him watching us last night, especially the first half, Morsy too, would have just taken the heat out of the game I think, receiving passes in tight areas never a worry when your first touch is just so good, they dictate exactly how KM wants us to play, brave on the ball, Vaz was also a good decision maker too, he did go long when he needed too..
But remember, he improved a lot after seeing him in his first game at PR, I remember thinking wow this lad is totally out of his depth, he went on to prove probably a lot of us wrong, certainly me, I knew we'd miss him...

Palmer is a Def improvement on hladky. Looking back hladky way better with feet but beaten very easily and totally out of depth on crosses and commanding area.

He definitely improved after his first season. That year he couldn’t make a save to save his life.
He had five games in a team of strangers the was replaced by Cook. Previous to that he was Golden Glove winner at Salford. He's definitely not a poor shot stopper.

He wasn’t a great shot stopper for me. Made the odd spectacular save and wasn’t the worst to represent this club. But I thought him a poor keeper principally because he never commanded his area. He played behind the defence, never controlled it. For a big enough bloke, he flapped at it in the air at best.
He also made his fair share of howlers and got found out with playing the ball out second half of the promotion season. He was never exposed to the kind of pressure Walton, Palmer and Muric were last season.
In fact he played behind a team that played for each other, knew what they were doing, scored goals for fun. My mother could have played behind that team and we’d have still won most of those games.
Last year, that ended and time will tell if any of that is recaptured. I don’t miss him, but I do wish we’d have signed a better keeper than the two we did as all three current ones are much of a muchness. We’d still have been relegated by a country mile though, which contradicts that tbf.

Data and analytics should be part of the decision but not the total basis for all of these calls. Just use it as another information source but don’t ignore overall context. Look at idiots now saying Cajuste isn’t all that because of one goal and one assist but ignoring other things he does in every phase of play.
I remember Blue Monday waxing lyrical about Muric when he signed all because of the data. He was absolutly terrible for Town outside of a couple games, shocking errors, costing points, no one had confidence in him on the pitch or in the stands. Bournemouth was the final straw for me but we still had to endure it months later like Southampton.

He struggled to get down low fast and conceded a fair few goals because of it. He made some great saves for us as well but wasn’t one of the better shot stoppers from distance ball went through him sometimes. Even in our promotion season, Norwich, West Brom, Cov and others come to mind.

I completely agree. I thought he was the absolute clear weak link in our side when we went up though he had a good season. Excellent with his feet it has to be said. Clearly needed an upgrade.
I like Palmer as a keeper. Will grow as a unit with our defence. It is notable how differently we play from the keeper forward though. Muric would have been a decent option at this level.
Not a big issue though. Palmer was absolute class for West Brom.
Palmer is a Def improvement on hladky. Looking back hladky way better with feet but beaten very easily and totally out of depth on crosses and commanding area.
Would take Vaz back over Palmer in a heartbeat. Palmer might save us a couple more goals via better shot stopping, but will prevent us scoring far more than he saves with his pretty terrible distribution.

Hladky was not a poor shot stopper.
He had a very poor second half of our promotion season. He made several errors that lead to a goal, and he got away with several more. We didn't have a credible option to replace him so he stayed in.
Personally, I don't really believe that Palmer is better than Muric, and Muric is probably still the best keeper at the club. It's a low bar, admittedly.
