Have we become a long ball side? 11:03 - Aug 11 with 2419 viewsThatMuhrenCross

Not a criticism, but I did notice last season we were more direct than the last time we were in the Championship. Understandable, given that we were a little out of our depth.

But on Friday, I couldn't help but notice that was the case again against Birmingham.

I was expecting this season we'd be more possession based, given we have superior players to the majority of the league now, but still seemed to be a case of playing it around between the centre backs and keepers, then getting it to the full-backs who pump it long to Hirst.

Will be a little disappointing if that is now our tactic, given the quality we've got.

I sincerely hope not but possession and goal kicking long stats start to raise a few questions.

I would say the team of KMck 2.0 is reforming.

Whether his principles have changed at all we wait to see, we can see what we’ve seen more recently which is for PL - less possession heavy therefore speed in transition was the aim but even that was unrealisable as a functioning repeat game plan. Whether we head back to being brave on the ball, aggressive in recovering the ball, and dominating the ball in the opposition half remains to be seen. It’s obvious we were not able to take that with us L1 to Champ to PL and in late stages of the championship promotion season we slightly tweaked with Tuanzebe coming into solidify the defensive side of the game. Either PL experience will be a hangover as we attempt to move back to dominate the ball (eyes open to how long that might take) or we’ve left that behind a bit and we are moving to pragmatism, it all remains to be seen.

When you look at Clarke and Ogbene/Jaden and to an extent Szmodics these are not players know for long cycles of ball retention, offering full backs and midfield small intricate triangles, these are more low touch ball carriers looking to make things happen or get on the end of things in and around the box.

Looking forward to watching this team get to grips with Championship footy and hearing KMck thoughts once the squad is settled in Sept.

What will the identity of KMck 2.0 be?

Definitely not. It was the tactic for that game, which made sense as they were pressing us a lot and we were losing the ball.

I like the fact we mix it up. Also Palmer seems to be not quite as comfortable on the ball as say Hladky.

Were you hiding when we got promoted? Hladky's contributions to goals and starting moves was enormous! Hence we now have a problem in the same system as Palmer cannot do it.

(Plus Morsy was the master of receiving the ball and pivoting which I also think we will struggle to replace)

Exactly, you need a 'keeper who can play football.

We have one but he's being hounded out.

He's being moved on because he's been crap, let's not rewrite history.

Doesn't mean he still isn't the best keeper of those we actually have at the club. That in itself is a bit concerning no?

Palmer may save the occasional shot. But his kicking. Catching. Corner defending etc is all very suspect. He's also given away indirect freekicks in the box.

Now I'm not saying he's sht. He's not. But he's not great either.

We do actually have a bit of a keeper problem

a niche perspective

We don't have a keeper problem. Palmer has been one of the best at this level over the past couple of seasons in a West Brom side that's otherwise not pulled up too many trees, it's not like Muric keeping loads of clean sheets when Burnley were playing teams off the park on their way to the title. He's not great with his feet but he's a solid enough keeper.

Muric does some things better and some things worse but you cannot carry a keeper that makes as many massive errors as he does. It destroys the confidence of those around him and renders the good stuff he does redundant. Of course Palmer has made the odd mistake as well, but nothing like the magnitude of Muric, who on his own cost us several points last season through really basic errors. His last appearance for us against Saints put the final nail in the coffin of our season, with a competent keeper we wouldn't have lost that match. He's been this way his whole career too and doesn't seem to be getting any better at cutting the mistakes out. There's a reason we're bombing him out after one season.

But Muric did get in the Championship team of the season, so he must have been doing something right.

All going to be academic if he gets the loan move to Italy anyway. Palmer and Walton are solid enemies for this season

What he did right was play in a dominant Burnley side that didn't concede many goals. Speak to Burnley fans, he did a Muric a number of times that season too. It's baked into him, unfortunately. There's a reason they replaced him as soon as they went up.

Although he did regain his place by the end of their season in the PL.

I get your point though…he’s unreliable and that probably isn’t going to change
