Loans with Option/Obligation to Purchase 11:29 - Aug 14 with 677 viewsLA_Tractor_Boy

Given how difficult the transfer market is to navigate, I like the idea of loans with an option/obligation to purchase IF we're promoted this season.

Potentially takes the pressure off recruitment next summer, with fewer players arriving during August.

An option is a lot nicer than an obligation though.

I suppose we view those players in that they can handle the step up, when we get promoted.

And if they can’t they are very sellable.

But if we aren't promoted then we'll have some serious gaps to fill

Yes, I think those are very shrewd business. Every loan has an option or obligation to buy, so if they come good and become superstars they are our players. That is far better than developing players for other clubs. If we don't go up, we don't have to pay the transfer fees.

If they don't come good, we have an expensive liability on our books. I assume the potential gap is insurable? Does anyone know?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I'd be very worried if we're obliged to sign players we didn't think were capable of stepping up, the point remains an option is far more favourable than an obligation though.

If they don't come good, we probably don't go up and they're then not on our books. In the less likely scenario that we go up despite them not coming good, they're still players who will have interest and we'd be able to get them off the books I imagine.

Yup.

I'd presume, as someone mentioned elsewhere - in the small print for the obligation would be certain terms that need to be met, such as minutes played - of course pre-agreed between both clubs.

Or not, depends what we agreed to, to get these deals over the line.

It's essentially allowing us to purchase a player who sees themself as too good for the Champ long term, so we probably wouldn't be getting that calibre of player if it was an option in most cases.
