I struggle to believe it would have been a surprise to the club that some of those played wanted to leave.

Maybe Morsy, maybe Tuanzebe. But not Broadhead, Wolfy or Burgess. Two of them have seen their game time significantly reduced in favour of players who have not yet actually proved themselves to be any better, but are simply ahead of them based on reputation and price tag. The other plays in the same position as the club captain and knows he isn't going to replace him unless injured, and knows McKenna always plays a left footer on the left side.

They’ve known since January that Broadhead, Taylor, Burgess and Woolfy wanted more game time, each could have gone then, but weren’t allowed because of the injury situation.

I just don’t know what we do if we don’t bring in a striker, because Hirst will miss games through injuries if we flog him for 90mins at the intensity we ask of him.

Can see it now, we won’t get another striker in and end up AAH on the bench and us praying Hirst doesn’t get injured, which he probably will. Been since the start of the year we knew we’d be going down and at the same time Delap decided he was off, and still we haven’t got a decent striker in to rotate with George.
We need a hell of final week before the window closes to make us genuine promotion candidates, because at the moment it doesn’t look like we will be.

Akpom is already our back up 9 as it stands.

We have signed a striker though, Akpom is a striker who can play the other forward roles too. We could absolutely do with another striker as competition and to enable us to use Akpom in other roles as we see fit but he's someone who's played most of his football recently as a striker, he's not a makeshift in that position.

Fair comment re Akpom. Although I understood that his stand out season was playing slightly behind the main striker at Boro.

Is he a player that we are confident to start on his own up front for three months should Hirst be injured? That we tried to sign Azor last week would suggest not. Azor certainly wasn't a replacement for AAH.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

The fact we were in for Azon tells you we're in the market for another number 9 and rightly so, because if Hirst is out for three months you wouldn't want to have to flog Akpom for 90 minutes twice a week for that length of time. I am sure we'll get another striker in and Akpom will be used flexibly either right up top or in one of the other forward roles, his flexibility will be helpful for meeting squad limits as he can be both a 2nd/3rd choice striker and one of the 8 that McKenna likes to have for the 3 forwards behind the main striker.
