Has anyone got some video of the penalty.. looked soft when I watched it live 17:42 - Aug 23 with 4884 viewsunstableblue

And on the replays

Greaves and defender both on ground together, contact as both got up, but more the attacker going over a static leg.. making a meal of it

But consensus it’s stonewall penalty, far from that from what I watched

Lots of blue-tinted bias on this thread as to be expected

I thought it was a clear penalty on first viewing and haven't seen anything to disprove that

Even if their player intentionally tripped over Greaves' leg, he should have stayed on his feet to not give him the opportunity

If that happened against us and it wasn't given, we'd have been fuming. Let's take the blue specs off just for a moment shall we?

So... a clear pen, because the player shouldn;t have been given the opportunity to dive?

Do you see where the logic of that assertion breaks down?

Last season is irrelevant

That's not what fans were saying when talking about mckenna credit. He's still getting that based on what we did 2 seasons ago. ( btw not disagreeing with that. Just saying past seasons are seen as relevant)

Sigh. Not in this context Frimmers. We were talking about Preston being a relegation-threatened team last season... but they're a massively different team this season (only 4 remain as starters from that last game's starters). That has nothing to do with a manager's (who's still here) abilities.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I'm not convinced it was a dive, other people are saying that

I'm saying even if you want to believe that, it wouldn't have happened if Greaves had stayed on his feet like he should have done

You can't just pretend that players won't take advantage of situations like that, all we can do is our best to not create those situations through sloppy defending

It was a dubious penalty, but many are these days &we can't change the decisions. Would have been more irritating if it had happened with 10 minutes to go, not 80 minutes.

I am fairly sure that if it wasn't given for us I would be shrugging it off and a bit annoyed at the theatrics from Hirst (or whoever just threw themselves over). As for the point that Greaves shouldn't have gone to ground, he was pushed. I do get that he shouldn't have then attempted to play the ball from on the ground between Osmajovic's legs but I guess that was instinctive and he made no contact with Osmajovic at all in doing so.

I am quite confident that, had that been given as a penalty for us, I would be saying we were lucky. I am also very confident that had that been last season it would have remained a penalty on VAR (they wouldn't have overturned the ref) and VAR would not have awarded it for us had it been the other way around and not awarded. That, for me, simply reinforces the pointlessness of VAR.

That's exactly the problem with VAR - many key decisions in football aren't clear cut so all it does is add another level of subjectivity.

Yes Greaves should have stayed on his feet, and would have if he had not been shoved over by Osmajić. So the referee missed both that and the intentional trip. But other than that I thought the referee had a decent game, the Johnson / Small (?) tangle, or apparent tangle, happened so quickly, despite being right in front of me, I couldn't tell whether there was any contact so I have to give the even better placed referee the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe Greaves is a bit too much on the tall but slight side for a central defender and that is why he spends too much time on the floor but that doesn't seem to be the case with the similarly built Woolfenden.
