Has anyone got some video of the penalty.. looked soft when I watched it live 17:42 - Aug 23 with 2260 viewsunstableblue

And on the replays

Greaves and defender both on ground together, contact as both got up, but more the attacker going over a static leg.. making a meal of it

But consensus it’s stonewall penalty, far from that from what I watched

I was 4 rows behind the goal. It looked stonewall to me.but I thought Greaves was fouled in the build up

Just watched Alex Griffin’s podcast and that shows a much clearer view than the other highlights. Looks like a clear foul on Greaves to me and very little contact while on the floor.

Soft pen, but has to be given . Greaves is on the ground, Greaves moves his left leg toward the ball, the PNE player feels the touch goes down like he has been shot. No for the choice referee from his angle. Greaves stays still no penalty. It was not an action to try and get up, it was an action to nudge the ball.

As you seem to imply, the referee was in no position to see whether there was any contact (although he should have seen the theatrical dive clearly). All afternoon as soon as they felt a player near them they threw themselves to the ground and rolled around in agony. The ref didn't always fall for it but did on one of the two most important occasions (the second being when Small pretended to have been elbowed in the face by McAteer). The funniest was when their keeper did even though it was his own defender he felt behind him!

It was a dive.

You do not have to give a pen if someone "feels a touch".

of course it is soft, but the ref can only give what he sees. He sees Greave leg move towards the striker while on the floor, sees the striker fall over. Greaves gave the striker the opportunity to fall over. From the ref's angle it probably looks a pen

And yet his assistant referee has a clear view of it and he has a poor angle on it. Why does he not check with the assistant?

He didnt see a clear foul though though, I suspect. He guessed based on the tumble.

If greaves attacks that first ball, as a CB should do, we don’t have the floor wrestle.
Just my opinion, but I’d be shocked if KM doesn’t watch that back with him and talks about it.

burgess would have headed that away

I was more frustrated at Johnson for completely missing the header and allowing the Preston player in to cross.

It was a no brainer to play Ashley Young yesterday. We had to stop the crosses coming in and defending isn't Johnson's strong point.

It was soft and thick (from Greaves). The player goes down easily of course but you can't be sticking your leg in there.

Soft but Greaves was on the deck again, doesn’t matter we had 85 minutes to do something about it.

I can't remember which NFL coach it was but when he was asked about a dubious decision in the game, a game they lost by three points, he said that the team had plenty of time to make that decision a non factor. That how I feel about yesterday, maybe it was a soft pen but we had plenty of time, possession and shots for it to not be the deciding factor in the game

Had our attacking players done their job yesterday then we wouldn't even be debating the rights and wrongs of conceding a penalty to a team, who finished last season one point of dropping down to League One.

Yep, and had that been on Hirst at the other end we'd be fuming it wasn't given. Seemed clear at the time, and Greaves made it easy for the ref swiping his leg like that. Had he not, maybe he wins the foul but he doesn't give the ref a decision like that does he?

It is whenever I've seen Johnson play that role. He's fine as an attacking wing back with a CB covering, but definitely not a defensive RB or RCB.

I hope this Caceres fella is being brought in to share the RB responsibility with Young. Johnson can be Leif's cover.

Personally I think the ref had a clear unobstructed view, he was confident in his decision. Greaves keeps still on the ground and does not potentially interfere with the striker then there is no reason to go down like a sack of spuds. It does looks soft but refs are easily conned these days. If it was the other way round we would be calling foul. Why do we never get these decisions ?

I wouldnt call for a foul there. The dive is so painfully obvious.

There were far worse fouls on Greaves in their area at at least two corners.

I reckon ref has a better view than lino. Striker who went down is blocking his view of Greaves's leg. Ref gave it quite quickly so rightly or wrongly thinks he's seen a foul.

I have just watched it back now and I agree he has a better view.

Greaves is playing the ball from between Osmajovic's legs but makes no contact with him. He simply throws himself over the leg. I guess the ref assumed there must have been contact for him to down but the dive is so theatrical.

I think the standard tv footage is very unclear. Hopefully a better angle will clear it all up for those in need. Mind you we cannot change it now.

This^^^
Not much has been said but in general Johnson does not defend solidly. It was his ball to win and he got underneath it and allowed it to bounce, giving Small the opportunity to cross. He does lots of decent things Johnson but I just don't warm to him at right back I'm afraid.

It was a penalty. And frankly they deserved it at that point as they we were pinging crosses in with abandon with no one bothering to stop them. If it hadn’t been a pen it would have been a header soon enough.

You deserve a penalty because you ping a ball into the box. Ok!

To be fair, one reason we were never going to get a penalty yesterday was because we rarely, if at all, had possession in their box.

The pen enabled them to change tactic, sit back and low block though. I'm not denying we had lots of time to recover, but it was a huge factor given it changed their tactics and made it a lot harder for us to score. Without the pen the game would probably have been more open, and we may well have gone on to win.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Spot on ( no pun intended)

Is Greaves a bit weak or something he’s always on the deck!?
