For me, it will be the saddest departure this summer 22:19 - Aug 31 with 2844 views | ringwoodblue | assuming Woolfie goes tomorrow. He is Mr Ipswich for me, he’s been there throughout some very difficult and some really great times and I will be really sad if he goes. A very loyal servant to the club and a good player who hasn’t really been given much of a chance by McKenna in the last few seasons so can’t blame him for wanting to leave. Even if he goes out on loan, I can’t see him see him playing for Town again unless McKenna leaves.

For me, it will be the saddest departure this summer on 09:09 - Sep 1 by SuperKieranMcKenna | He did a great job getting us out of this division last time round. Not entirely convinced O’Shea and Greaves are significant upgrades (certainly not on the ball). Best ball playing defender I’ve seen in my time at the club, be sad if he goes but he’s part of club history now! |
Genuine question - how long have you been following Town as I have seen many players with the ball playing ability of Woolfenden, although obviously a subjective decision . . .

For me, it will be the saddest departure this summer on 09:31 - Sep 1 by Ryorry | I am 100% convinced we would have done better retaining Wolfy and Burgess as regular starters instead of their very expensive replacements. Playing players because they cost more seems a strange, illogical strategy to me. |
We haven't won a league game with neither Luke Woolfenden or Cameron Burgess starting since Morecambe (H) on 24th January 2023. I think, following the rule of 'never change a winning team', they should have started the Premier League season as the preferred CB pairing, with O'Shea and Greaves fighting to take the spots off them. Instead it was the other way around, and we didn't look better for it.
| They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all! | Poll: | Who should start in CM with Cajuste? |

While I'm not convinced about Greaves I am slowly coming around to his usefulness. One thing that hasn't been mentioned on this thread is his attacking threat from set pieces. He won the penalty at Brum and obviously scored on Sat. Burgess and especially LW were never great in that sense - the former was maybe unlucky not to score a few more goals. Morsy leaving really shafted us. Had he stayed he would have stayed captain, meaning DO'S would have been more likely to have to rotate with LW (albeit I'm sure it wouldn't have happened loads). But now he's simply not going to play.

Morsy was captain last year and Woolfenden barely got a chance. It was clear who McKenna preferred.

not quite right, woolfenden started the season and was replaced after the first 3 games. we weren't a winning team then. (he came back in for the everton loss)

Wasn't our starting Premier League partnership Woolfenden and Greaves? Thought they actually looked decent together for the most part.

correct, they did ok, but let in 7 goals in 3 games, so not exactly "never change a winning team"! i think the greaves/axel injuries were a bit of a sliding doors moment for the defence development. we'd picked up 3 good draws with the same back 4 and were starting to build partnerships and we never got that back.

I'll stand my belief that the biggest issue we have is O'Shea and Greaves do not work as a partnership. Now it feels like we're doubling down on persisting with them together. Promotion is dependent on whether that is the right decision.

It’s sad to see some of these players who formed the basis of the double promotion depart but the defensive record in the Championship would suggest they weren’t exceptional. It was really our offensive that secured promotion, being the leading scorers in the division. Our goals conceded total was only the 4th best of the top six and worse than 3 teams outside it. Getting goals flowing again is more privital to our season I think.

I didn’t say he was exceptional- but have we actually upgraded, the players who’ve replaced him saw us with the worst record from a winning position in the PL. And this season £30m+ pairing Greaves and O’Shea have yet to keep a clean sheet. [Post edited 1 Sep 17:07]

For me, it will be the saddest departure this summer on 17:19 - Sep 1 with 98 views | HighgateBlue | When you first posted this, I was going to say "wait until Chappers goes too!" But then, I thought that such black humour wasn't really warranted, and it might make people think that I was claiming to be ITK, or whatever. I really didn't think we'd lose the both of them. We all had a really enjoyable laugh at Norwich when we signed Nunez. But he who laughs last laughs loudest. If they hold onto Sargent, one wonders what this season will hold for our respective clubs.
