Here’s the main problem right now… 11:25 - Sep 1 with 1090 viewsThatMuhrenCross

Ipswich:

Total xG: 7.20 - 3rd in the league
Accurate crosses per match: 7 - 1st place

But…

Shots on target per 90 mins - 2.30 - 24th place

It’s not that we’re not creating. We’re just abysmal at hitting the target.

Needs addressing.

And when you consider that Hirst's header from 5 yards out counts as one of our Shots on target.

As do penalties.

I've been saying this for days - we're not sharp enough up front yet. The stats clearly show we're becoming increasingly dominate through the games, but not making it count in front of goal.

Just panic stations

Get that first win, players start to get their first open play goals, and things will settle

reminds me of everton under Dyche, taking shots in the wrong places but alot of shorts. When moyes went back, he slowed the play down, got them to take shots in better positions and resulted in more shots on target and goals

a niche perspective

The only figures that really count are the scores at the end of the game. xG can be whatever, but if we don’t put the ball in the net we don’t get points.

Thanks, Pep.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Although technically accurate on a game by game basis, teams with a high xG tend to score a lot of goals across the entire season. This isn't conjecture, but fact.

So, as I've said in other threads, if we keep the xG up, and the front line improves a little (which is to be expected both with recent introductions and improved match sharpness), the wins will absolutely come.

Absolutely 100%. Those figures are absolutely shocking. 24th for shots on target! How?!

This problem has been an evident and consistent feature of the first 4 league games.

When some were questioning whether McAteer for £12m was a wise move, given that he was a Leicester reserve, the standard response was that Hirst had been a Leicester reserve! As if such a high quality player falling into that category gave it a shiny lustre.

I like Hirst, but he's really not been on it this year, and I'm glad that we've finally put together (or maybe we're still going!) a potentially decent striking department.

The stats do seem to show we're creating more than scraps, and Nunez will only help with creating chances when he plays, so let's hope that we can start sticking them away. Most other teams have guys that can. There's no excuse. Draws are no good if you want promotion. We need bucketfuls of wins. And that means consistently scoring 2 or more in reality.
