I watched the interview. A good actress. I suggest you stop being so gullible. And keep on spouting the old right wing crap, to try to stop debate with anything you don't agree with. She's a hypocrite.

I find all these excuses for Rayner's behaviour nauseating. That she's a woman, was working class, has a northern accent, etc, etc, has nothing to do with the fact she appears to have been caught out cheating HMRC and not paying the correct Stamp Duty. Given her position there is no excuse for not getting the correct advice.

Keir Starmer's question in Parliament on 25 January 2023:

“Does the Prime Minister agree that any politician who seeks to avoid the taxes they owe in this country is not fit to be in charge of taxpayer money?”

It’s a shame but she has to go. Your position is untenable if you can’t follow the rules, however complex. She’s been a target for years, this will be the final nail.
On the plus side, 18 months on the backbench is normally sufficient punishment/rehabilitation, so there’s a pathway back to Cabinet.

A few months on the back benches, well distanced from Starmers sh1te government probably won't do her much harm.
Be ready to come back an take over from Starmer after him and his current version of the Labour Party get trounced in the next election.

You appear to be missing the “seeks to avoid” bit of that question.

I don’t think she should lose her job given she took the advice she did in an attempt to pay the correct tax - but expecting her not to get any flak for it after the scrutiny she’s placed onto Tories who have been in the news with similar headlines is just silly

It would be interesting to know who she took advice off, her butcher, her baker? Any competent tax advisor or accountant would not have got that wrong, the guidance is clear on trusts for under 18 year olds and parents/trustees maintaining responsibility. There is a human element to the story so would understand if she keeps her job. Does seem a genuine mistake to me. Seems to me that like Prescott before her, she has the deputy job to give the government a veneer of being in touch with the Northern powerbases and wider Labour party due to being an authentic Northerner rather than purely on meritocracy.

The guidance may be clear but what would prompt you to look for it, having divested yourself of a property? It's a surprising rule, and I am certain that most would not even have thought about it. Including lawyers.

You don’t want to debate this, just parrot the Daily Mail nonsense.

This is very nuanced. It’s not Zahawi avoiding £5m in tax.

If she has lied about what she did and why she did it, she’s toast and rightly so.

it is an obscure rule for sure, but having asked the question, you would have thought the advice given was at least accurate. I am guessing if she did actually seek advice, she asked the lawyer handling the conveyancing of the new house. Would be the logical one to ask. As you say, it might not have occurred to her. Which makes the seeking advice a bit of a smokescreen. I doubt it would have occurred to me.

I guess the problem in that situation is only the Labour Party can remove her as deputy leader. She'll be sitting in the back benches after resigning (or kicked out) of the cabinet, but would then have to take over from Starmer if something happened to him. Very messy

Awful lot of people wise with hindsight. Why would you even ask if you don't own the property?

We are all wise with hindsight, we all learn from our own and other's mistakes. Don't you ? The conveyancing lawyer firm has now denied being asked and has accused her of scapegoating. Not looking good for her.

I am very surprised they would have said such a thing given client confidentiality / privilege.

However, the point of course is that they are the lawyers and probably ought to have been making those enquiries, not her.

It is absurd reaching conclusions without the information.

Wait for the assessment by the ministerial investigator fellow.

The lawyers will have looked at, does the seller have the right to sell, is the property worth it and is the council going to put a road through here.

They will not look at your finances. That is down to the bank and yourself.

We are told she employed specialist lawyers to assess her tax liability. So either she should go back to them or produce the advice they gave.

Indeed. The best thing is to await the review.

Actually it is routine for conveyancers to deal with the stamp duty. Usually on the basis of a simple questionnaire asking if you are going to be left owning more than one property.

She will doubtless be sharing the advice / documents with the investigator chap.

I drove to work today and somebody had sprayed "Brits Out" on a motorway bridge. Not seen anything like that outside of the Gallowgate before.

It's incredible how she's still in her job, she's been lying all the way through. And above all, the housing minister!!!

Brits out? That’d be awkward. There’ll be all sorts of similar nonsense now, either by different cliques or just people taking the pee. We love a trend, especially if we can film it and put it on social media. I’m convinced we’re evolving in reverse now.

That’s very believable from the company and regards her not actually seeking advice previously. I’ve got into a muddle by making the mistake of seeking a solicitor’s advice on sorting out an inheritance. They advertise a full package of support but in reality don’t go anywhere near tax issues and left me high and dry with a significant tax liability. So on the one hand I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s been naive and caught out and this is a genuine mistake, but on the other she’s not someone who should be a div (I’ve got an excuse as I’ve never aimed to be a minister!).

It’s irrelevant what I think though. She could have been trying it on for all I know.

I’d be surprised if she survives, but will she be missed? I’m struggling to think of any big advancements the government have made on housing in the last year.

It's her position as Deputy Leader that could be a big problem for Starmer. He could end up with somebody he isn't particularly comfortable with.
