A team of predominantly mid-table Championship level players, all playing in a system that suited them perfectly, had developed connections so they knew exactly how to play together, and had the momentum from the previous promotion which caused a fantastic level of passion, energy and desire. And all that contributed to creating a team that played in a lovely to watch style, all those nice, passing team goals; consistently won thrilling games with late comebacks, and won automatic promotion that should never have been possible. I doubt it ever gets any better than the 2023/24 season (and second half of 22/23). And it’s a season that will always have happened.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

And also I wonder how many of players thought they play in premier league?

Morsy, Mass, Chappers, Wolf, broady, burns Burge, fridge, all have that to take away

Special group, special times, special memories

Nicely put, but also shows why clinging on to some remnants of the team is pure sentimentality. It was one well oiled perfect team better than the sum of its parts at that level, as soon as it starts unravelling, it's gone. Keeping woolfie and Chappers today means nothing in terms of keeping that alive. Unfortunately.

Can’t help but remember Chaplin running from the bench right across the pitch to join in the celebrations against Southampton.

TW indeed TD (relatively speaking). What a team, what an energy, togetherness, spirit, journey. I’ll remember that era so fondly, amplified having come off the back of a fair few years of utter dross.

Things move on though, we’ve come a hell if a long way and with the greatest will in the world we’ve had to kick on. Doesn’t feel like it now but we’ve got a new group now who can write their own story. McKenna ball 2.0.

We played some lovely football and got wonderful points tallies to get promoted and yet we were only second in both seasons. It was followed by a poor season in the top flight.

I am afraid 1999-2001 beats it for me especially as relegation still saw European football and we played lovely football throughout. That team and that Wembley experience are my fondest memories of Town. Maybe because it was easy to get tickets and see us play too.

I would also rank 1992-94 above it too because that promotion season came out of the blue and we lived with the Premier League in that inaugural season too. Of course, that was also followed by an embarrassing season in the top flight that took some getting over.

Hopefully this time around our return to the top will be much quicker and I can enjoy better years and new great memories.

That year and a half where we took the handbrake off against Forest Green and never looked back until we suddenly found ourselves playing Liverpool.
Ah, the memories...

For me it was the relentless pressure we put on teams in the early stages of games, wave after wave of attack and sustained possession and willingness to drive forward, usually led by the captain.

Teams couldn't live with it and while obviously it was easier to do in L1, even in the Championship I swear we went into several half times at 2-0 or 3-1, those sorts of scorelines - that probably didn't happen as often as it felt but it was a reflection of how we played and entertained.

Yeah, this is spot on. I’ve been genuinely sad this evening and trying to work out why this hurts more than before. It’s what that team both stood for and delivered. We’d had nothing to cheer about for more than two decades, and I personally was drifting away into apathy about football generally. Then they put that L1 run together and made us all believe again.

So much is owed to those players, they weren’t the most successful in the history of the club, nor the greatest quality, but what they were was a symbol of the rebirth of this football club, and for me, has them up there with anything else we’ve ever done. I’ll be forever thankful that we had those two magical seasons.
