Measuring the economy in Toasties 09:47 - Sep 5 with 1318 viewswkj

In the age of smashed burgers and hot honey brioche it is hard to keep up, and there I was thinking the rebranding of Toasties to Paninis was bad enough! Either way, times are always changing.

Me and my beloved legal partner were travelling the other day (within England, we're not bougie) and ended up pulling off for a mouthful of grub. Not really looking at the price, as we had no choice, I ordered a cheese and onion toastie while they got the BLT (maybe they are bougie, imagine adding salad to a perfectly good bacon sarnie.) Vanilla as I am, I ordered a tea and they got a coffee (despite an awkwardly long description of "coffee")

Needless to say, a pretty conservative meal which I was mentally thinking about £15 (£20 when you factor in motorway tax). The whole meal came to £35! Two toasties and 2 hot drinks for £35. Thatcher's Britain I tell thee! I should have had a biscuit instead.

If you were at Gloucester Services, that was cheap. Otherwise still unsurprising in a world where fish & chips is the best part of £20 nowadays.

We were around the Durham area, but honestly couldn't tell you the exact place given the itinerary we had - the usual Dundee to Ipswich (and back) pilgrimage.

If they are chips bought in from the wholesaler then I bulk, but if we're talking potatoes cut on scene and properly fried - I could extend to £15 for a cod and chips as an occasional treat.

Admittedly it was 30+ years ago, but when I worked in a chip shop, all the ones in the town bought in potatoes (from a local supplier) to make their own chips. Presume it was a better price and easier to store, not needing refrigeration/freezer space.

We got through an enormous volumes of chips, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights.

There’s a great little place just off the A1, it’s called Bowes Incline.

Theres also the Mill House, Birtley, which is also just off the A1.

Both of which come with the coveted “Newcy Recommended”.

Definitely better than either Washington or Durham Services.

Morning WKJ, just looking for some clarification. Were they 'proper' toasties constructed from yer traditional and highly respected white sliced bread or was the soulless European slacker the Panini involved?

Yeah, times are tough. I've heard of "will work for food" but that's a bit extreme.

I couldn't imagine what Friday nights were like for you as for me, those weekend shifts really brought out the best in humanity at Sainsbury's. Imagine serving a queue of 40 all yelling "cod n chips" like it’s a medical emergency. I bet you developed the hand speed of a Hemsby card dealer and the emotional resilience of a Victorian chimney sweep.

I wouldn't be surprised if traditional chippy workers don’t season their food anymore. No salt and vinegar, they just stare at there plate and remember.

I was blinded by the arbitrary sprig of rocket they put on the side, I sure hope I was eating government issued bread and none of this foreign muck like soured dough.

There was more than 40 in the queue. We did kebabs as well, so it was hordes of drunk students all bellowing for extra chilli sauce (or, on one occasion, "just pour chilli powder on it") and roaring "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", while the quiet old boy I was serving asked for his "[something inaudible] and chips".

On the chilli sauce front, the old Greek Cypriot bloke who owned the shop used to chuckle earthily and say "Put your bog paper in the fridge!" Tho I did learn that it's the tomato which makes the sauce really bite, sort of activates the chilli.

Rockets a master of deception. It's the smoke and mirrors of the green leaf salad world.

I've recently added a stylish touch of patriotism to my beloved bacon sarnies. Just make um up as normal, sliced white bread, bacon and lashings of Kerrygold butter.

Now here's the clever part, instead of just adding the ketchup willy nilly inside the sandwich, close the sandwich and gently squeeze the ketchup into a neat red Cross on top of the middle of the bread.

You can now look down on a the non patriots across the lunch table.

But was the sandwich made using artisan bread? I do like a finely sliced slab of artisan bread, and that sounds like fair price for it.

Too right. It doesn't get more British than good old fashioned Danish Bacon, Kerrigold butter and Heinz Ketchup. You'll get some who like the brown sauce instead of Ketchup and give you a wink as a backhanded condiment.

People like us deserve medals whilst Guthers is busy slinging his donner meat with chilli sauce to keep the good times rolling.

I bet we could get all these good times in for < £20 for the 4 of us

You and Dolly might need to go out for lunch together by the sounds of it.

You see... eating bread is a lot like making love to a beautiful lady… sure, you can fuss about artisan flour and hand-shaped loaves, but at the end of the day what you want is something soft, reliable, and always ready. That’s why a sliced loaf does the job every time: no waiting, just straight to satisfaction.

Spot on, artisan bread or the fools errand that is panini ( not to be confused with the excellent sticker books of my youth) are for the kinda people who bring a ball gag and spreader bar on a first date.

What about making love to a lady who isnt beautiful (in the sense of looks) but has a beautiful personality?
Is that more like a non sliced loaf?

Ridiculous, at that price I would feel guilty about not using a knife and fork - you should never use cutlery with a dirty donner; that's what mother used to say

As I have to keep telling people, forget the A1 and enjoy the proper road trip that is the A68. That also gives you the opportunity to think you are still in Scotland with a visit to the takeaway in Tow Law and the dubious charms of a deep fried pizza, would be amazed if it is not still under a tenner. But like all hard drugs I would never recommend trying it more than once, if that.

I did pay fifteen quid for fish and chips at a festival this summer (actually called fish and frites...) but normally I have no trouble finding a decent fish supper around a tenner. Even at FolkEast with no fish and chip van I managed deep fried whitebait (from the Pinneys of Orford stall) and some supposedly Mexican fancy chips from the chicken in butter sauce stall next door, nine fifty plus four quid and better than the Belladrum fish supper (but that was pretty substantial).
