The right decision or not ?

Certainly a big blow for Labour.

Given that her integrity was not impugned at all, it seems fairly severe. Evidence perhaps of a much stricter approach than the previous government.

If this was a Minister under the previous government, Rayner et al would be aggressively calling for it. This forum would be frothing.

having read the decision letter it all feels very marginal. i think she comes out of it quite well, and failure to take additional advice, seems understandable given two advisors pointed to the lower rate. it's an error anyone could have made. it doesn't feel - on the basis of those facts to have been reckless. but then the standards are quite rightly high in such important public offices. i feel sorry for her - i have no doubt she'll be back quickly.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

If it was the previous government they would have done feck all about it and carried on regardless. And other people on here would have said they were being picked on and it was no big deal.
Which is better? Higher standards and people actually being held accountable?

I just think it makes her look stupid. He had access to a huge amount of experts and chose not to use them. Make mistakes like that with her money, god only knows what she does with taxpayers cash.

Well, this government didn't act to sack her. She resigned. Zahawi was sacked over his tax affairs. Under Sunak, Menzues and Benton were sacked regarding financial affairs. So, the last government did act.

What is most concerning about all of this is the purposeful misinformation and mistatement of facts to suit agendas. We have to keep calling this stuff out. Its increasingly pervasive everywhere in ways which were unheard of even ten years ago.

To make the assertion that this government didnt act, in circumstances where she resigned on receipt and consideration of the ethics advisers report, is just silly. You cant criticise this government for not sacking someone who had the integrity to make the decision before they had the need to do so!

Under the previous government two ethics advisers resigned because of how the government dealt with things.

Caught with her hand in the sweetie jar, amazing what power and opportunity does to a person. Had she not been the chief finger wagger at other misdemeanours then she may have not been so harshly judged. Trying to tax wealth and home ownership heavily whilst becoming wealthy through the back door or secret handshakes is not a great look.

before the standards report i was suspicious of what she'd said. i thought there were omissions suggesting she hadn't really taken formal advice and / or had asked a misleading question, and the issue was simple enough for her to have known the answer through an online search. the report shows that that wasn't the case - she did take legal advice, she was transparent in the question she asked, the advice suggested she should pay at the standard rate (so the simple online answer was certainly incomplete), and she made an entirely honest error in not seeking additional advice. she took a short-cut - she should have sought additional advice - while intending to do the right thing - the report doesn't question her integrity. it's very different from the last government. i don't think she comes out of this that badly.

Yet another, seemingly deliberate, attempt to set a narrative which is not reflective of facts.

There is no suggestion of back door deals, secret handshakes, or that it had anything to do with power and opprtunity, or the dishonesty implied by the cookie jar reference.

Read the ethics adviser's letter.

Keep calling it out folks. So important.

Rayner isn't the only person with a disabled child. Of course I have sympathy with anyone facing the struggles attached to this. But not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to put a house into trust, Take £162,000 ( a quarter share) out of the trust to put into an £800,000 house and also have a grace and favour property in London.
She made an error, a mistake. We cannot say for certain either way whether it was deliberate or not.
She won't be the last to make errors in a government.
Unfortunately whatever office you hold within any government you have to be whiter than white. The corridors of parliament and the press are full of backstabbers waiting in the wings to put the knife in and twist it. I have my views, but they will remain silent as I cannot claim I am whiter than white, but how many can.

Either dodgy and rightly resigned.

Or if an honest mistake then I don’t want her in charge of anything complex like running the country in the absence of the PM

Poll: What type of manager will we get?

Suella Braverman, Home Sec - resigned Oct 22 because she accidentally used her personal email.
Liam Fox, Defence Sec - resigned 2011 because his mate /best man was posing as his adviser.
David Blunket - Home Sec - resigned 2004 because he previously had a job without consulting an independent committee.

Those are the ones I remember but I’m pretty sure that there are loads more former cabinet members that have felt they had to resign because they made a silly (probably honest) mistake.

Braverman clearly intended to use her private email.
